Research Technician (Career-Track) — Gut–Liver Axis & Microbiome
The Awoniyi Laboratory investigates how the gut microbiome drives primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and PSC-associated colitis, a progressive cholestatic liver disease and its accompanying inflammatory bowel disease. Using germ-free and gnotobiotic mouse models, defined bacterial communities, and molecular profiling, the lab links specific microbes and their metabolites to liver and intestinal inflammation and fibrosis, with the long-term goal of translating these mechanisms into therapy.
We seek a Research Technician for a long-term, career-track position. The lab invests substantially in training and expertise and seeks a candidate who will grow with the group over multiple years, taking on increasing scientific and operational responsibility. The role is laboratory- and vivarium-based; it is not a clinical research coordinator or clinical-trials role.
Responsibilities
Maintaining and breeding mouse colonies and collecting tissue under approved IACUC protocols; culturing and manipulating aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and colonizing gnotobiotic mice; performing core molecular assays (DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR, 16S/library prep, histology, immunostaining, flow cytometry, and targeted gene-expression profiling); processing liver, bile, and intestinal samples; maintaining meticulous records; and, over time, leading projects, mentoring new members, and contributing to publications.
Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, or a related field; prior laboratory research experience (at least 1 year); an interest in microbiology, immunology, or the gut–liver axis; comfort working with mice; and a desire to build a lasting career in research. Hands-on experience with molecular techniques, IACUC/animal protocols, rodent husbandry, or microbial culture is strongly preferred; further training is provided.
The position offers
Direct mentorship from a physician-scientist, broad and deepening technical expertise (gnotobiotics, flow cytometry, NanoString profiling, microbial genomics), a defined path toward senior technician and lab-manager roles, and the resources of one of the world’s leading research enterprises.
