Background of the recruitment and description of the project
The Quantum Informatics Group (qig-lab.net) aims to establish a new framework of quantum science & technology that connects quantum control and quantum measurement with real-world technological and societal applications. The long-term scientific vision of the group is to transform quantum coherence from a fragile phenomenon into a designable information resource, thereby creating new principles of quantum metrology, quantum control, and quantum information science.

- Quantum Metrology & Machine Learning (Flagship)
- Diamond Quantum Electronics
- Quantum Materials & Extreme Conditions
- Quantum Environmental & Infrastructure Sensing

Research Environment
Our group actively promotes collaborations with leading research institutions in Japan and abroad, and maintains close partnerships with organizations such as The University of Chicago, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Korea Institute of Science and Technology, and the National Institute for Materials Science. Supported by competitive funding programs, we provide a stable research environment for pursuing long-term scientific challenges.
This position offers an intensive opportunity for early-career researchers who aspire to become independent principal investigators and to develop the skills and mindset required to become PI-ready within the next few years.
Principal Investigator
The group is led by Keigo Arai, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, School of Engineering, Institute of Science Tokyo. Dr. Arai received his PhD in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2016 and conducted research in quantum control and quantum metrology at Harvard University.

Responsibilities
Successful candidates will join the Quantum Informatics Group and conduct research related to one or more of the following areas:
- Advancement of quantum control and measurement integrated with machine learning
- Development of diamond quantum electronics
- Exploration of quantum materials (magnetism and superconductivity) under extreme conditions
- Development of environmental and ocean quantum sensing technologies
- Application of quantum probability theory to cognitive science and social systems
Research themes will be determined based on the candidate’s expertise and the strategic direction of the group.
Research Roles
Our research environment integrates researchers with complementary research styles. We particularly welcome researchers with strengths in the following roles:
- Concept-driven researchers: Researchers who create new concepts and measurement principles in areas such as quantum measurement theory, quantum information, and machine learning.
- System builders: Researchers who build quantum sensing platforms by developing quantum devices, materials, and measurement instrumentation.
- Experimental drivers: Researchers who accelerate research execution through high-throughput experimentation, reproducibility testing, and experimental automation.

Number of hired description: To support the expansion of research activities in quantum science and technology, the Quantum Informatics Group is recruiting up to five researchers. These positions aim to strengthen the group’s research program spanning quantum metrology, quantum devices, quantum materials, quantum sensing, and quantum social systems. The specific research topic will be determined based on the candidate’s expertise and the group’s research strategy. The number of hires may be adjusted depending on the strength of the applicant pool.

Wages description: Annual salary system (in accordance with the Regulations for Fixed-Term Employees of the Institute of Science Tokyo).
