Rural Outreach Coordinator

Essential Job Duties:

The Rural Outreach Coordinator manages the Rural Works! program, which connects NC State undergraduate students with summer employment opportunities in private, public, and nonprofit sector jobs across the state's 80 "Tier I" and "Tier II" counties and other economically distressed areas. This role also leads strategic outreach and engagement efforts, coordinating NC State students, faculty, and staff to support rural communities in addressing key challenges.

Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Design and Implementation:

  • Coordinate with the, Division of Academic and Student Affairs, Industry Expansion Solutions and Cooperative Extension Service in design and execution of the Rural Works! Summer internship program.
  • Work with program supporters, including Corporation for National and Community Service, Golden LEAF Foundation, NC State colleges, private employers and others to ensure financial support as necessary to ensure student interns are properly compensated.
  • Coordinate with supporting organizations, including the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Golden LEAF Foundation, the Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) and the Cooperative Extension Service to ensure delivery of needed support to participating students.
  • Design and implement training as appropriate to prepare students for success during their participation in the program.
  • Assist employers in developing internship job descriptions and posting opportunities in ePack to effectively connect with interested students.
  • Implement an assessment mechanism to evaluate the success of the program, to include and pre and post-survey of students and employers.
  • Report to the Career Development Center leadership team on how NC State students, faculty and staff could appropriately improve services to Tier I counties in North Carolina.
  • Make recommendations on strategies to increase recruitment of students from rural North Carolina.
  • Make recommendations to the university for continuation and extension of the program to increase NC State's ability to respond to the needs of rural North Carolina.

Communication, Recruitment and Partnerships:

  • Work closely with county employers considering hosting student interns for Rural Works!, including for profit, nonprofit and government employers to communicate program goals, objectives and expectations.
  • Convene and coordination of advisory council for Rural Works! to ensure active participation by each of NC State's colleges in the program.
  • Ensure strong communication with county-level employers to ensure appropriate matching of employer demand with student interest.
  • Coordinate with representatives of each of NC State's Colleges and campus partners to ensure timely dissemination of information about the program to administrators and to students considering participating in the program.
  • Coordinate with NC State communications and other entities to ensure appropriate coverage and characterization of the Rural Works! program.

Other Work/Responsibilities:

  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Minimum Experience/Education:

  • Requires post-baccalaureate credentials, which could consist of an advanced degree or equivalent professional training and experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be IT competent
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, proof reading skills, and speaking
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by phone, with high professionalism
  • Ability to manage work assignments from a variety of staff and clients
  • Ability to accomplish projects with little supervision
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of campus departments, student organizations,
    and clients external to university
  • Previous experience in project management
  • Previous experience working with information technology professionals
  • Previous experience in basic website development using WordPress

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in public policy, business, agriculture, higher education or related field.

Required License or Certification:

  • Valid driver's license required.
  • A valid North Carolina driver's license must be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained as a condition of employment.
