Responsibilities
This position is responsible for assisting in the operation of the NMR Facility under the supervision of the Facility Director. The candidate will be involved with lab oversight in ensuring compliance with safety standards and facility policies, conducting routine maintenance, providing basic new user training, recording instrument usage, preparing billing reports, and performing other duties related to the safe and effective operation of the NMR Facility, as assigned by the Facility Director.
Primary Duties Include:
- Working on routine maintenance of all NMR machines in the NMR Facility; this includes the monitoring of cryogen levels (L-He, L-N2), and ensuring delivery and fills of L-He and L-N2 are conducted in a safe and timely manner
- Coordinating with the Department purchasing agent and supply vendor in scheduling L-He deliveries
- Engaging in weekly checks to ensure instrument performance meets specifications, including: line shape, signal-to-noise ratio, shimming file updates, and nuclei tuning and probe matching
- Assisting in running NMR samples for undergraduate education laboratory programs and providing technical support for experiments
- Assisting with and/or running routine NMR samples for internal and external NMR users and performing other relevant duties as assigned
Additional Responsibilities:
- Monitoring daily NMR operation statuses such as: variable temperature systems, cryoprobe status, compressed dry air pressure and dew point, room temperature, power supply systems, and O2 monitors
- Verifying NMR tube quality, proper condition of spinners, and smooth operation of sample cases
- Coordinating laboratory cleaning and maintaining orderly and clean lab environment
- Ensuring adequate stock of lab supplies and maintaining accurate laboratory inventory records
- Resolving user scheduling conflicts according to stated use and access policies
- Recording and maintaining instrument logs and collecting user and usage data
- Processing and preparing monthly billing statements in accordance with facility rate schedule and under guidance of Director and Accounting Staff
- Coordinating with Facility Director, Building Manager, supporting staff, and vendors to conduct maintenance or repairs in NMR labs as needed
Qualifications
A bachelor's degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: post-high school education may substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.)
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position is an effective communicator who is able to convey technical information to both technical and non-technical users. This individual is also well able to independently perform relevant tests, examinations, and procedures, as well as understand and comply with written and oral instructions.
Other preferred skills include the following:
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations
- Knowledge of how and ability to safely operate machinery, tools, equipment, and materials relevant to NMR functioning
- Ability to utilize blueprints and specifications
- Efficacy with oral and written communication
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Knowledge of how and ability to interpret relevant federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations, as well as University policies, procedures, principles, and practices

Anticipated Salary Range
Anticipated starting salary for this position is in the high $50,000s.
