Senior Admissions Counselor, College of Biological Sciences
About the Job
The Undergraduate Office of Admissions is seeking a highly motivated, focused, and results-oriented Admissions Counselor who will serve as a key contact for prospective students interested in the College of Biological Sciences (CBS). This position represents the University of Minnesota and the College of Biological Sciences to prospective students, prospective student families, and high school officials while providing customer service to prospective students from a variety of geographical locations. This is a 100%, full-time, 12-month, on-campus, annually renewable appointment in the academic professional and administrative (P&A) personnel series. Most work is conducted during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. However, evening and weekend work is occasionally required, as necessary, to properly execute the duties of this role. Occasional remote work may be accommodated at the discretion of the Office of Admissions when such remote work is in the interest of the University.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Recruitment and Outreach 25%
- Serve as the face of the College of Biological Sciences for prospective first-year students interested in pursuing our majors at the U of M at a variety of recruitment events.
- Recruit and facilitate enrollment of high-achieving and prospective CBS students through highly personalized student interactions, implementation of strategic recruitment initiatives using data, individualized outreach, and in-person visits and events.
- Implement extensive CBS recruitment and relationship-building efforts through targeted written, telephone, and in-person communications.
- Partnerships and Relationship Management 25%
- Serve as a key liaison with the College of Biological Sciences, working as a stakeholder manager and a bridge with Admissions.
- Assist in advising the CBS Ambassador Student Group.
- Use data and personal student relationships to inform CBS of impactful recruitment efforts.
- Special projects as assigned by the College of Biological Sciences and the Office of Admissions, based on personal strengths or abilities.
- Campus Visit and Event Coordination 20%
- Proactively plan and execute specialized visits to create a memorable experience for students by following a strategic visit model created by the Office of Admissions and the College of Biological Sciences.
- Collaborate with CBS to plan, facilitate, and execute campus visits and events for students.
- Engage and utilize the CBS Ambassador program to assist with on-campus visits, specialized experiences, and recruitment.
- Participate in the execution of the office’s Visits and Events programs.
- Meet with students and their families on campus to provide admissions information and support them in taking the next step in the enrollment process.
- Learn 3-4 presentations and present information regularly to prospective students and families.
- Counseling, Advising, and Customer Service 20%
- Represent Undergraduate Office of Admissions by answering questions and providing extra-mile customer service to prospective students and their supporters about university resources, academic opportunities, applications, admission practices, scholarships, and more.
- Manage and respond to all freshman CBS inquiries.
- Act as a subject-matter expert in CBS opportunities, curriculum, and career outcomes in counseling conversations with prospective students.
- Application Review 10%
- Evaluate academic and other credentials for admission decisions and counseling purposes.
- Identify top students to recommend for merit and need-based scholarships aligned with the enrollment goals of CBS.
- Recommend students for the CBS Dean’s Scholars cohort.
- Serve on admissions committees to support holistic review requirements.
Hybrid Occasional remote work may be accommodated at the discretion of the Office of Admissions when such remote work is in the interest of the University.

Qualifications
Required
- BA/BS degree plus at least two years of relevant experience, or master's degree.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering the University’s mission of an inclusive and welcoming University community.
- Must have a valid driver’s license; may occasionally support recruitment events off campus.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends, as needed.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking skills and experience.
- Strong ability to work independently within established guidelines, make decisions according to policies and procedures, and exercise judgment in recommending procedural changes.
Preferred
- Prior experience in college admissions and recruitment or a closely related unit such as campus tours, orientation, college access community based organizations or other direct work with student outreach and enrollment.
- Event planning or project management experience.
- University of Minnesota experience defined broadly such as former student, graduate, employee, or community member of any campus.
- Demonstrated experience with Technolutions Slate.
About the Department
The mission of the Office of Admissions is to take leadership in recruiting and enrolling undergraduate students who will benefit from and contribute to the University of Minnesota scholarly community. The Office of Admissions coordinates undergraduate student enrollment efforts and collaborates campus-wide with colleges, departments, and the units within the Office of Enrollment Management to meet the University’s enrollment goals. The Office of Admissions serves prospective undergraduate students and incoming undergraduate students.
Pay and Benefits
Pay Range: $50,000 - $55,000 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience
Time Appointment: 100% Appointment
