The newly established Program for Memory Longevity (PML), led by Attila Losonczy in the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) in Dallas, in collaboration with the Paninski and Peterka labs in the Zuckerman Institute (ZI), Columbia University, New York and the International Brain Lab (IBL) is seeking a full-time Research Software Engineer. The Research Software Engineer will work closely with these labs to help develop and maintain software tools, in particular for the analysis and interpretation of large-scale imaging data. The ideal candidate will play an important role in translating research code into robust and easy-to-use software packages, as well as contribute to the understanding and use of imaging data. The primary location is at UTSW, including collaborative visits at ZI, New York.
Main responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain software packages for the analysis of functional optical imaging data (e.g., one- and two-photon calcium and voltage imaging).
- Develop and maintain local and browser-based user interfaces for these packages.
- Work closely with other research software engineers to coordinate APIs and wrappers to link the optical imaging analysis suites to other synchronously monitored signals (e.g. electrophysiology or behavioral videography)
- Support the adoption and use of the software by the worldwide scientific community through dissemination efforts, including publishing written documentation and video tutorials, and assisting with workshops
- Work closely with machine learning researchers at UTSW and ZI to incorporate new algorithms into the software packages
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s in computer science, data science, engineering, mathematics, neuroscience, or a related technical discipline with 6-10 years of experience.
Master’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferred.
Specific skills and/or knowledge required for the position:
- Proficiency in high-quality scientific/mathematical coding in Python
- Knowledge of standard software engineering practices, including continuous integration, unit testing, issue tracking, code review, and version control systems (e.g. git/Github)
- Ability to collaborate on multidisciplinary research in a collegial environment
