The Department of Global Public Health is a multidisciplinary department with the aim to advance knowledge about challenges and opportunities for public health in a local, national, and global setting. Many researchers at the department are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision makers at regional, national, and international levels. The department is responsible for three international master’s programs and the researchers are actively involved in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The department has 12 research groups, around 120 PhD students and about 140 employees.

Description of the subject area

Clinical epidemiology is a branch of epidemiology that focuses on applying epidemiological principles and methods in clinical research. The aim is to improve outcomes by supporting clinical decisions in the prevention, diagnosis, prognostic assessment and treatment of diseases. The Department of Global Public Health at Karolinska Institutet is increasingly engaged in research and education in this field and one of its focus areas is trauma and critical illness. For this reason, collaboration with organizations with clinical expertise and research experience in this area is particularly important.

The Department of Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care (PMI) brings together all of Karolinska University Hospital’s resources in anesthesia, surgery, and adult intensive care. Through PMI, Karolinska University Hospital provides surgical services, anesthesia, pre- and postoperative care, highly specialized pain management, all adult intensive care services, and hospital-wide sterile services supply.

In parallel, PMI conducts leading research and education in anesthesia, surgery, and intensive care. We are also responsible for hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO/pressure chamber services). In addition, we carry the region’s trauma care mandate.

Your mission

You will lead and conduct research focusing on the application of epidemiological methods within the framework of international clinical intervention- and observational studies, particularly clinical studies of system-level interventions. Furthermore, you will lead and develop education, teach and supervise students, including within the Master's program in Global Health.

The position also includes supervising students, doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers.

You will be expected to conduct competitive research, actively seek research grants and collaborate with national and international actors in the field. You will also be expected to actively contribute to the department's various activities and to a strong scientific environment.

The position is combined with 50% clinical service as at least specialist physician at Karolinska University Hospital at PMI, Karolinska University Hospital in Solna. In this role, you will contribute to perioperative medicine and intensive care through clinical work and methodological expertise in clinical research. As part of our team, you will work in a dynamic and committed environment where our activities are characterized by highly specialized care. In this role, as a specialist in anesthesiology and intensive care, you will work with patients receiving advanced specialized care within surgery, obstetrics, vascular surgery, orthopedics, abdominal surgery, plastic surgery, endocrine surgery, head and neck surgery, neurosurgery, as well as trauma care. You will also be involved in a broad intensive care practice, including neurointensive care and hyperbaric medicine. Research, education, and innovation are central elements of our work.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on education and research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific skills, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical skills; very good scientific skills and clinical skills.

Further eligibility requirements

  • You should have experience and broad methodological expertise in clinical epidemiology and the application of various study designs in clinical research.
  • It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

The employment will be combined with an employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in Senior Physician in Anesthesia and Intensive Care at the The Department of Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, Stockholm Region and therefore you must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in anesthesia and intensive care as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the position includes clinical work, you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (3), pedagogical skills (3), leadership and collaboration skills (2), and clinical skills (1).

It is furthermore meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • Pedagogically further developed course- and educational activities aimed at international students.
  • Experience of epidemiological research on trauma in close collaboration with clinical research environments and in collaboration with national and international universities.
  • Experience of leading and developing educational programs with an international profile.
  • Experience of leading international clinical intervention- and observational studies, with a particular focus on interventions at the system-level, relevant to perioperative medicine and intensive care.

Criteria for Specialist Physician Positions at Karolinska University Hospital:

  • Appointment as assistant chief physician at Karolinska University Hospital requires a minimum of three years of full-time clinical service.
  • Appointment as chief physician requires a minimum of five years of full-time clinical service within the primary specialty in addition to certified specialist competence, as well as a defined area of medical responsibility and expertise, and documented teaching and supervisory qualifications. A doctoral degree (PhD) is also required for appointment as Senior Consultant.
