Description of the subject area
The Department of Medicine Solna (MedS) has a well-established and strong educational and research profile in medicine and biomedicine at a high international level. The education at the department, especially within the medical program, spans large parts of the clinical medical field over several semesters. The subject of clinical medicine, including internal medicine and closely related fields, is a strong research and clinical area which continuously develops. The Division of Clinical Epidemiology includes research and educational activities within this area.
At Karolinska University Hospital, the Theme of Inflammation and Ageing brings together several internal medicine specialties, including endocrinology and metabolism, nephrology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, geriatrics, rheumatology, and dermatology and venereology.
Within the Medical Unit for Gastroenterology, Dermatology and Rheumatology, inflammation is the unifying focus. The unit provides highly specialized patient care and conducts leading research in common inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as in rarer systemic inflammatory conditions including myositis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and vasculitic diseases.
Rheumatology care at the unit is at the forefront of e‑health solutions and patient involvement, particularly in the collection and use of quality registry data. The unit also offers advanced diagnostics and treatment for complex inflammatory bowel diseases, rare gastrointestinal disorders, and intestinal dysmotility. Venereology is an integral part of the medical unit’s activities.
Your mission
As Senior Lecturer, your role will be to strengthen the implementation and development of education in undergraduate and doctoral education, and we are looking for a teacher at a lecture level who is deeply committed to education and has a clinical background in internal medicine or closely related fields.
We are looking for a clinical role model with a genuine interest in education and a great pedagogical competence to ensure that the next generation of doctors leave Karolinska Institutet provided with excellent preparations to manage diagnoses in internal medicine and closely related fields throughout the healthcare system.
This position concerns a role as course director and examiner within the department’s educational activities in clinical medicine, provisionally within our full-semester course in term 5 of the medical programme. The research focus should be within internal medicine or closely related fields, reflecting the department’s educational responsibilities within the medical curriculum. The research is expected to include projects related to clinical epidemiology, clinical treatment research, and/or research of a more translational character.
You will be based at the Department of Medicine Solna, Division of Clinical Epidemiology. The position will be combined with 50% work as specialist trained physician (either at specialist, consultant or senior consultant level) in internal medicine or closely related fields at the Department of gastroenterology/dermatology/rheumatology, Theme inflammation and aging at Karolinska UniversityHospital.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on education and research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific skills, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical skills, very good scientific skills and clinical skills.
For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements are stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure and these are applied in relation to the subject area of the established recruitment profile.
It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
The employment will be combined with an employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in in internal medicine or closely related fields at at the Department of gastroenterology/dermatology/rheumatology and therefore you must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in internal medicine or closely related fields as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. Here you will find the basic and core specialties that may become relevant for this position.
Since the position includes clinical work, you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).
Assessment criteria
The Senior Lectureship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (2), pedagogical skills (3), leadership and collaboration skills (1), and clinical skills (1).

It is furthermore meritorious that you have demonstrated
- Responsibility as a leader for courses in clinical medicine during the medical program.
- Broad experience of clinically integrated learning and training
- Experience in clinical research, for example studies on biomarkers, clinical treatment studies, or register‑based studies.

Criteria for Specialist Physician Positions at Karolinska University Hospital:
- Appointment as assistant chief physician at Karolinska University Hospital requires a minimum of three years of full-time clinical service.
- Appointment as chief physician requires a minimum of five years of full-time clinical service within the primary specialty in addition to certified specialist competence, as well as a defined area of medical responsibility and expertise, and documented teaching and supervisory qualifications. A doctoral degree (PhD) is also required for appointment as Senior Consultant.
