Position Summary
This role is part of a team that oversees the diagnostic imaging quality assurance program for a large teaching hospital and affiliated outpatient clinics. Duties include performing periodic diagnostic x-ray equipment testing, ensuring regulatory compliance, radiation shielding design, dosimetry calculations, and CT protocol optimization.
Job Responsibilities
- Tests variety of x-ray equipment and oversees radiographic technologist QA programs within CT, mammography, general radiography, fluoroscopy (Cardiac Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology, Vascular Surgery), dental (intraoral, panoramic, CBCT), and podiatry.
- Prepares and maintains equipment testing records for review by New York City Department of Health (NYC-DOH) inspectors.
- Submits documentation to ACR for accreditation of CT and mammography facilities.
- Performs mammographic x-ray unit testing and facility surveys as required by ACR/MQSA.
- Responsible for radiation shielding design, shielding integrity checks, and radiation protection surveys.
- Oversees Primary Diagnostic Monitor (PDM) QA program.
- Advises clinical and technical staff on any issues related to radiation safety.
- Performs dose calculations for patients and research subjects.
- Remains current with Joint Commission standards of practice, ACR accreditation requirements, and NYC-DOH and NYS-DOH regulatory requirements.
- Provides technical expertise to various committees and departments.
- Responsible for maintaining up-to-date New York State Education Department (NYSED) license in diagnostic radiological medical physics.
Education
- MS or PhD in medical physics, radiological physics, or a related field.
Experience
A minimum of four years of post-graduate clinical experience performing independent diagnostic imaging quality assurance in a large university hospital setting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must be familiar with the rules and guidelines of pertinent regulatory and accrediting bodies (NYC-DOH, NYS-DOH, MQSA, FDA, JC, ACR).
- Must be able to interface with all levels of hospital staff and possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
Licenses and Certifications
- American Board of Radiology (ABR) or Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM) certification
- NY State Diagnostic Radiological Medical Physicist License eligible
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
Must be physically able to transport a variety of physics testing equipment.
Must be able to respond to emergency communications as needed.
