About us: At the Department of Physiology Anatomy & Genetics (DPAG) we undertake discovery science where we reassemble physiological processes at the molecular, cellular, tissue and systems level of organisation. In so doing we provide a bridge to translational medicine, and interface between physical and life sciences. Overview of the role: We are seeking a Senior Postdoctoral Research Scientist and Image Analyst to join the Srinivas group. The ideal candidate will be an expert at analysis multidimensional image volumes. In this role, you will be responsible for collaborating with experimental biologists on analysing microscopy data of developing embryos. This post is available immediately and is fixed term for 3 years.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop research questions within a specific context, conduct individual research, analysing detailed and complex qualitative and/or quantitative data from a variety of sources, and generate original ideas by building on existing concepts
  • Develop, establish, and pursue appropriate analytical protocols and techniques to support research
  • Regularly write research articles at a national level for peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and reviews. Present papers at national conferences, and lead seminars to disseminate research findings
  • Agree clear task objectives, organise, and collaborate with other members of the team and coach other members of the group on specialist methodologies or procedures
  • Share responsibility for shaping the research group’s plans and the writing of group-funding applications for new research projects
  • Provide information to project stakeholders and represent the research group at external meetings/seminars, either with other members of the team or alone
  • Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups
  • Member of departmental committees advising on scientific and management matters for the department
  • Use scientific equipment in a laboratory environment

Selection criteria:

Essential selection criteria

  • Hold a PhD/DPhil in a relevant discipline
  • Strong publication record and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field
  • Possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research projects and methodologies
  • Ability to independently plan and manage a research project, including a research budget
  • Ability to raise research funds through making grant applications
  • An ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive research environment for people from different backgrounds
  • Extensive post-qualification research experience working with volume image data
  • Familiarity with creating virtual reality-based approaches for visualising volume image data

Desirable selection criteria

  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Some basic familiarity with questions in developmental biology
  • The ability to code in multiple languages, for the purpose of generating user-friendly image analysis and visualisation workflows, and collaborative software development. Experience with a wide range of libraries/frameworks and cloud infrastructure tools.
  • Familiarity with Machine Learning, Neural Network and AI driven image analysis methods
  • Experience with data management for large data sets (compression, archiving).
