Senior Research Fellow (Microbiology & Immunology)

The National University of Singapore invites applications for a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, to join the Microscopy Cluster. The NUS Medicine Microscopy Cluster is a centralized research facility that integrates Histology, Confocal, Multiphoton, and Electron Microscopy to provide comprehensive imaging and sample preparation capabilities. By combining complementary technologies and expertise, the Cluster supports advanced biological and biomedical research across multiple spatial scales. Appointments will be made on a 2 years contract basis in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.

Purpose of the post

We are seeking an experienced microscopy specialist to support the Director in the operation of the state-of-the-art, multi-user Microscopy Cluster at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. This role connects the Light Microscopy Unit with the Bio-Imaging Analysis Unit, ensuring integrated workflows, optimized instruments, and robust user support across the cluster.

The candidate will maintain and enhance light microscopy systems, expand the user base, implement new imaging capabilities—particularly multiphoton and FLIM systems including the Leica SP8 DIVE—and develop analytical workflows and software to support collaborative projects.

Main duties and responsibilities

Serving as a key resource for researchers, the SRF will support the director in the daily operations, establish best practices in imaging and analysis, and help build a collaborative, innovative, and engaged user community that maximizes the Core’s impact.

The SRF will be able to:

(1) Oversee daily operations of the imaging facility, ensuring efficient scheduling, resource use, and high-quality service.

(2) Provide hands-on user support, workflows, and data analysis, and advising on experimental design.

(3) Develop and implement new imaging workflows, protocols, and analysis tools to enhance data quality and efficiency.

(4) Support strategic growth by integrating new technologies and expanding the facility’s capabilities.

(5) Contribute to scientific impact through publications, grant support, workshops, and creation of training materials.

(6) Assist with any other duties of a similar nature that are delegated by the PI.

Qualifications

The applicant should:

(a) Have at least a Doctorate degree in a related discipline in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Biophysics, Physics or related field and 6 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of skills, education, and experience.

(b) Expertise in advanced optical microscopy (brightfield, confocal, multiphoton and time-resolved fluorescence/FLIM)

(c) Strong understanding of optical microscopy principles, instrument design, and hands-on operation of advanced light microscopy systems.

(d) computational skills for data analysis using software such as Fiji/ImageJ, MATLAB, Napari, Qu path, IMARIS…

(e) Experience in biological experimental design and implementation.

(f) Experience in managing multiple research projects, balance scientific and technical responsibilities, and contribute to the strategic development of a Core Facility.
