Are you motivated by using geological knowledge to address some of the major challenges facing society, from protecting clean water resources and adapting to climate change to supporting sustainable energy solutions, responsible use of raw materials and informed management of the subsurface?
At the department of Near Surface land and marine geology (SURFACE) in Aarhus, we are looking for a Senior Researcher who can combine strong expertise in Quaternary geology with advanced geological interpretation and 3D modelling. You will work across terrestrial, lacustrine and marine environments and contribute new knowledge about the geological systems that underpin many of society’s critical decisions. The position offers a unique opportunity to work at the interface between cutting-edge research, geological mapping, public-sector advisory services and applied projects, and to translate fundamental geological understanding into knowledge that makes a difference for society. The position is based at our office in Aarhus, with an expected start date of December 1st, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.
About the position
You will have a strategic role in SURFACE and will strengthen our capacity in integrated Quaternary Geology, 3D geological modelling and the connection between marine and terrestrial subsurface systems. You will contribute to research, research-based advisory services, and consultancy tasks, while helping to increase international visibility and external research funding.
A central part of the position is to integrate terrestrial, lacustrine and marine Quaternary datasets across large regions and formerly glaciated areas. You will interpret and combine geophysical data with borehole information and sedimentological data to develop detailed, robust 3D geological models.
Strong field expertise in Quaternary Geology is essential. You will plan and carry out Quaternary geological field investigations onshore and offshore and take part in laboratory work and sedimentological analyses. The work requires an in-depth understanding of sedimentary successions, sample descriptions, stratigraphic interpretation, and geomorphological analysis related to glacial depositional environments and glaciotectonic complexes.
The 3D models will help connect the deeper and near-surface Danish subsurface onshore and offshore and improve our understanding of landscape evolution, glacial depositional systems and Denmark’s Quaternary geological history, including geological connections across national borders in southern Scandinavia. The work includes advanced 3D interpretation software and the systematic organization and analysis of large geological datasets in GIS, with a strong focus on analytical and cartographic quality.
You will initiate and lead research projects, pursue international funding opportunities, participate in strong international research collaborations, and provide research-based advisory services to public authorities and private-sector organizations. The role includes project management, scientific publication, occasional supervision of PhD and master's students, and contributions to the continued scientific development of GEUS. On occasion, you may also develop and lead field courses and excursions for external partners.
The role involves close dialogue with public authorities and project owners. Through research-based advice and clear communication, you will contribute to sustainable development plans in relevant sectors. We therefore expect a strong ambition to connect consultancy and advisory tasks with high-quality research.
Who are you?
We imagine that you hold a PhD in geology or a related field and have documented research experience in glacial geology and Quaternary geology. You have solid experience integrating geophysical, borehole, and sedimentological data and using these data to build 3D geological models.
You have well-documented experience with Quaternary geological fieldwork, including sedimentological descriptions, stratigraphic interpretation, and geomorphological analysis in glacial and glaciotectonic settings. In-depth knowledge of the geology of Denmark, particularly its Quaternary geology and geological evolution, is an advantage. Alternatively, we expect a strong willingness and ability to rapidly develop this knowledge as part of the position.
We emphasise experience with GIS and 3D geological interpretation software, project management and external funding, international research collaboration, and supervision of early-career researchers and students. You are able to work independently while contributing constructively to interdisciplinary teams, and you bring strong analytical skills, reliability, and scientific curiosity to your work.
Strong written and oral communication skills are essential, including the ability to communicate complex geological results clearly to scientific peers, public authorities, project partners, and other stakeholders. You must be able to communicate in English, and since the primary language of the organisation is Danish, you must be prepared to learn Danish.

At GEUS, you will join the Department of Near Surface Land and Marine Geology, where we conduct research on a wide range of topics related to the processes, resources and geology of the upper 300 metres of the subsurface, both onshore and offshore.
Based at the university campus in Aarhus, the department consists of around 35 enthusiastic colleagues working in an interdisciplinary environment. We combine field observations, laboratory analyses, and advanced modelling to address scientific questions and societal challenges.

Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the relevant trade union agreement.

The employment procedure
