Sessional Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education
The Faculty of Education at York University invites highly qualified applicants for a Sessional Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education. This is an open Contractually Limited Appointment (CLA) to the teaching stream for a 3-year term to commence July 1, 2026.
The Faculty of Education is one of the leading faculties of education in Canada with a particular focus on research with social impact. The Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Teacher Education program is the only one of its kind in Ontario.
The successful applicant will teach in and provide leadership to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Teacher Education program including practicum facilitation and programmatic support. The ideal candidate is committed to helping OCT certified teachers achieve their academic and professional goals in achieving the certification to teach deaf and hard of hearing students in Ontario classrooms. The successful applicant will demonstrate a commitment to inclusive and innovative teacher education and will bring a theoretical and practical orientation to the study of teaching and learning for students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH).
Candidate Qualifications:
- Degree: PhD or PhD near completion by the appointment’s start in Education with a focus on deaf and hard of hearing education is required.
- Teaching:
- A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching and dedication to students in a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher Education Program (e.g., teaching accomplishments or awards, pedagogical innovations, student and peer evaluations).
- At least 5 years of school-based experience teaching deaf and hard of hearing students from preschool to secondary school age across communication modalities.
- A record or evident promise of excellence in arranging, placing and supervising students in deaf and hard of hearing practicum settings, in both spoken and signed language modalities.
- Demonstrated ability to teach fully online (e.g. develop course websites, manage both synchronous and asynchronous learning activities). Familiarity with eClass as a learning management system and Panopto as a video platform will be an asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum expectations, legislation, policies.
- Additional: Have teaching qualifications, with preference given to candidates holding Ontario College of Teachers certification. (Or Hold Ontario College of Teachers certification).
- Specialist certification in Teaching Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
- Demonstrated leadership experience.
- Additional qualifications in special education preferred.
Hiring Policies:
- The anticipated starting salary for this position at the rank of Sessional Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream and commensurate with qualifications and experience, is in the range of $116,000-$126,000.
