3. Department of Nursing
Nursing education at Shantou University Medical College (SUMC) began in 1986. The Department of Nursing was formally established in 2014 and now offers a comprehensive educational framework covering bachelor's degree, master's degree, and continuing education for working professionals.
Closely aligned with the National Health Commission's "15th Five-Year Plan" for nursing development, and serving the "Healthy China" strategy and the broader goal of "building a community with a shared future for mankind," a pioneering model for cultivating high-level, internationally oriented nursing talent has been pioneered in China since 2013. SUMC Nursing adopted English-medium instruction across the program, systematically restructured and optimized the curriculum, and brought course content, teaching methods, and instructional language up to international standards. This model not only meets the practical needs of China's healthcare system but also keeps pace with global advances in nursing education. It has effectively shifted the focus of nursing education from simply transmitting knowledge to developing practical competencies, and from training in isolated skills to fostering overall professional qualities. This approach has also provided a valuable reference for higher nursing education across the country.
- Undergraduate programs: Nursing (with tracks in International Nursing and International Midwifery)
- Master's degree authorization: Master of Nursing (Professional Degree) authorized in 2014 under the first-level discipline of Nursing

Clinical Nursing
Shantou University Medical College (SUMC) has established a comprehensive, high-level clinical nursing system encompassing general medical care, oncology, mental health, ophthalmology, and stomatology through its six directly affiliated hospitals. This system provides a robust platform for nursing discipline development, clinical practice, and talent cultivation.
Nursing at the First Affiliated Hospital of SUMC is recognized as a Key Discipline of Guangdong Province. The hospital operates multiple provincial- and municipal-level training bases in areas such as palliative care and geriatric nursing, as well as specialist nursing clinics for stroke, diabetes, wound care, and ostomy care. The Second Affiliated Hospital of SUMC has specialist nursing teams in pediatrics, emergency care, plastic surgery, and burn care. It also operates provincial- and municipal-level training bases for stroke and geriatric nursing and offers a range of specialist nursing clinics.
Cancer Hospital of SUMC delivers a variety of transitional care programs for cancer patients and serves as both a municipal intravenous therapy training base and the leading institution of this specialty. The Mental Health Center implements its distinctive "Four Transformations" management model and is a provincial training base for psychiatric specialist nurses. In 2024, it was approved as a psychiatric nursing practice base for the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.
The Joint Shantou International Eye Center of Shantou University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (JSIEC) has established a national teaching base for ophthalmic specialist nurses and continuously advances nursing education and research innovation within and beyond Guangdong Province. JSIEC has developed extensive expertise in specialist nursing and actively promotes digital nursing innovation. It has been recognized as a national exemplary case for improving service quality and efficiency and has led the publication of a national digital textbook on specialist dental nursing.
By complementing one another's strengths and working collaboratively, the affiliated hospitals have created a specialized, high-level nursing development framework integrating clinical services, specialist care, talent cultivation, and research innovation.
