The Institute for Combustion Technology (ITV) at RWTH Aachen University , led by Prof. Heinz Pitsch, is a leading research institute in combustion and reacting flows. experimental methods to investigate and model complex reacting-flow phenomena.
The Research Project
Your research will be embedded in the European research project ENH3ANCE, which aims to establish a scientifically sound and experimentally validated basis for the clean, efficient, and fuel-flexible use of ammonia-based fuels in gas turbines.
The research approach combines high-fidelity numerical simulations and turbulent combustion modeling. A closely related example of this approach is the InsigH₂t project, which investigates hydrogen combustion in gas turbines. At ITV, you will:
- Perform and analyze high-resolution simulations of turbulent jet and swirl flames using DNS and LES
- Investigate flame propagation, thermodiffusive instabilities, turbulence-chemistry interaction, and pollutant formation in ammonia-based flames
- Develop, implement, and validate physics-based turbulence-chemistry models for LES using DNS and experimental data
- Collaborate closely with international academic and industrial partners
- Publish your research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present your results at national and international conferences
- Supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s theses and contribute to the institute’s teaching activities

Skills/Qualifications
To strengthen our team, we are looking for a motivated researcher with a strong interest in computational turbulent reactive flows. Ideally, you bring the following qualifications and experience:
- Master’s degree or Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computational Engineering Science, Simulation Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
- Good knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and numerical methods
- Experience with scientific programming in Python, C++, MATLAB, or comparable languages is preferable
- Experience with turbulent reacting flows, direct numerical simulation (DNS), Large-Eddy Simulation (LES), or combustion modeling is an advantage
- Self-motivated, organized, responsible, and able to work independently on scientific problems
- Motivation to publish research in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present results at international conferences
- Fluent written and spoken English; knowledge of German is advantageous but not required
