Position and Qualifications Positioned in the Department of Applied Social Sciences, the sociology program at Hollins serves undergraduate students from a wide range of interests and academic and professional goals. The program focuses on building robust skillsets that allow students to pursue their areas of interest with theoretical and methodological rigor. The sociology faculty work collaboratively with other university programs like public health, political science, economics, and communication studies to support students across the social sciences disciplines. Department faculty are committed to supporting students through intentional mentoring and advising as they pursue meaningful sociological pathways to academic and/or industry careers. Current students in the sociology program are driven to develop practical skillsets with which they can apply their sociological knowledge to a variety of important social issues with criminology as a key area of study. Students from the major have pursued diverse pathways from Hollins that have included plans for law school, graduate school in sociology and criminology, and professional programs and career paths. This position carries a teaching load equivalent to six courses per academic year. The faculty member must be prepared to teach introductory and advanced courses within sociology as well as courses anchored in the core curriculum designed to serve all majors. This position also carries the potential to contribute to the expansion of undergraduate courses and research opportunities in sociology. Additional duties include maintaining an active research agenda, service to the department and university, mentoring and advising undergraduate students, and curricular development. The successful candidate for this position will be broadly trained in sociological theory and research methods. They will be able to contribute to the core curriculum in sociology and support methodological course offerings across the social sciences, such as introduction to sociology, social problems, social theory, research methods, and qualitative or quantitative methods, in addition to substantive elective classes. A sociologist is sought who has a commitment to mentoring students from a wide variety of backgrounds through their sociological education and development as social scientists. The preferred candidate will also have a commitment to research and teaching in areas of criminology and/or digital sociology. Experience preparing students for career success in the social sciences and working in a collaborative or interdisciplinary environment are also highly valuable to the department.
