Specialist Poison Information
Position Description
Provides professional and technical assistance regarding poison information and potential poisoning exposures.
Major/Essential Functions
- Receives calls related to potential poisonings and using appropriate age-specific guidelines is able to give correct management in treatment.
- Correctly calculates, using appropriate formulas, to determine patients' level of exposure and make a determination if exposure is in the toxic range.
- Initiates and demonstrates problem-solving ability by communicating effectively with coworkers to define concerns, clarify misconceptions, and function as an effective team member.
- Implements appropriate follow-up calls per poison center guidelines.
- Provides information regarding the identity and treatment of toxins to all physicians and health care facilities.
- Utilizes advanced communication skills to obtain an accurate history of the exposure, then makes diagnostic decisions and treatment recommendations regarding the exposure utilizing poison center guidelines.
Required Qualifications
Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program; certification or eligible for certification as a Specialist in Poison Information from the American Association of Poison Control Centers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current certification as a Specialist in Poison Information from the American Association of Poison Control Centers.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish is preferred.
- Experience working in a busy ICU or ER.
