Staff Nurse-Medical Oncology
Scope of Position
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institutes (OSUCCC-James) mission is to improve health in Ohio and across the world through innovation in research, education, and patient care. The team provides patient care and supportive services directed towards achievement of positive patient care outcomes, maximizing the patients involvement in their own plan of care, and reducing the length of hospitalization, the staff nurse plays a critical role in staff engagement, the patient experience, quality and safety, and cost-effective care.
Position Summary
The Staff Nurse is responsible for managing and providing care to the patient and their family, and for directing and supervising nursing care provided by other members of the patient care team. The Staff Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, delegating, and evaluating the nursing care of patients in alignment with the professional practice model.
Required Qualifications
Degree in Nursing from a CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) or Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accredited nursing program required. Current Ohio license or interim permit.
*Experience in relevant care setting preferred.
A 36 bed fast paced unit serving patient with solid tumor cancers that are admitted with carious medical complications. Some of the most common cancer diagnoses on the unit are breast, lung, and GI cancers, but a myriad of cancer diagnosis are common. The patients typically have had a complicated medical history and cancer journey. Many of the patients have undergone multiple treatment modalities. Due to the diversity of cancer and medical diagnoses as well as the range of treatment modalities seen, the nurses on this unit gain a varied and extensive set of skills. Nurses on this unit must be able to gain and maintain a high level of clinical knowledge in order to care for this patient population. This unit demonstrates Relationship Based Care in that the staff and management team highly value the care of the patient, care of self, and care of colleagues. The nurse functions as a part of a multidisciplinary team including RNs, PCAs, Physicians, PAs/NPS, Social Workers, and Patient Care Resource Managers. The team also receives additional support from a Staff Educator, a Staff Development Coordinator, and Clinical Nurse Specialists.
