The School of Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is establishing a new Department of Materials (MAT), which is expected to be officially approved and launched in Fall 2026. The Department of Materials invites applications for substantiation-track faculty positions at all ranks (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor) from scholars whose research spans the multidisciplinary field of Materials Science and Engineering, and Intelligence (MSEI). Areas of particular interest include: (i) materials for health and biomedicine; (ii) materials for energy and information; (iii) engineering materials for sustainability; (iv) advanced modeling and characterization methods; (v) AI-empowered and autonomous materials synthesis.
The Department aims to be an impact-driven, interdisciplinary hub that exemplifies innovation, development, and translation of advanced materials technologies in health, energy, and sustainability — addressing both global challenges and national priorities. Successful candidates will contribute to the Department’s vision by:
- Nurturing future leaders through a rigorous, interdisciplinary educational and research experience that equips students with a strong foundation in MSEI.
- Conducting cutting-edge, transformative materials research focused on global and national priorities such as biomedical and health technologies, energy and information, advanced manufacturing and sustainability, etc.
- Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship by providing resources and mentorship to translate research into commercial applications, thereby supporting economic development, societal well-being, and strategic national growth.
The Department will offer academic degrees, including BSc, MSc, MPhil, and PhD programs.
