About the Project

1. Context

Communities face complex challenges that often necessitate solutions beyond the capacity of any single organization. Collective impact (CI) has emerged as a promising approach, bringing together diverse stakeholders to tackle shared issues. CI projects involve cross-sector collaboration, a common agenda, data-driven decision-making, and a commitment to continuous improvement. This research delves into the effectiveness and underlying mechanisms of community CI projects, aiming to provide valuable insights for practitioners and policymakers. The key issue is can CI projects bring about sustainable long term system change and offer better life chances than other forms of intervention.

2. Research Questions

This study will address the following key questions:

Effectiveness: To what extent are community CI projects successful in achieving their stated goals? What factors contribute to their success or failure?

Mechanisms: How do CI projects achieve their impact? What are the key processes and dynamics that facilitate positive change?

Context: How do contextual factors, such as community characteristics, leadership styles, and funding structures, influence the design and implementation of CI projects?

3. Methodology

This research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection methods – but fundamentally based on participatory engagement and specific case studies.

Quantitative data: Surveys and interviews will be conducted with project participants (e.g., community members, staff from participating organizations) to assess project outcomes and collect data on key variables affecting success.

Qualitative data: In-depth case studies of successful CI projects will be conducted through document analysis, focus groups, and participant observation. This will allow for in-depth exploration of the processes and dynamics at play.

4. Significance

This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on CI by providing a comprehensive understanding of its effectiveness and the factors influencing its impact. The findings will be valuable for:
