East Carolina University is a public doctoral/research university in Greenville, North Carolina, with an enrollment of nearly 27,000 students. It is one of the largest universities in North Carolina. ECU offers 87 Bachelor’s degrees programs, 69 Master’s degree programs,13 Research Doctoral degrees, 5 Professional Doctoral degrees, the Brody School of Medicine, and the School of Dental Medicine.
The School of Theatre and Dance, in the College of Fine Arts and Communication, has an enrollment of over 250 students across BFA programs in acting, dance, educational theatre, and entertainment design and production, and a BA in theatre arts. Over 30 faculty and staff support the artistic and creative work of the students and school. East Carolina University is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.
Job Duties
Job Duties include teaching, recruiting, supporting the BFA in Dance program, service to the school and University, and other duties based on the needs of the School.
The teaching load for this position is 12 credits per semester with an expectation for creative contribution to the ECU/Loessin Playhouse Season. The generalist candidate will contribute to one or more of the techniques (Ballet, Modern, and Jazz) that constitute the “Triple Track” emphasized in our degree program. There is potential for the candidate’s additional areas of expertise (e.g., hip hop, musical theatre, commercial dance) to be emphasized within the teaching load.
This position is contingent upon available funding.
Minimum Education/Experience
- Terminal degree (MFA or equivalent) or equivalent professional experience in Dance.
- Experience training and educating pre-professional or professional-level dancers
- Developing creative activity and/or research.
- The ability to teach at least two of Ballet, Modern/Contemporary, and Jazz Techniques; beginning through the advanced levels
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Preferred candidates may have one or more of the following:
- Experience teaching dance at the university level
- Additional expertise in any area of dance practice or scholarship, including but not limited to hip hop, musical theatre, commercial dance, tap, dance history, pedagogy, somatics, partnering, improvisation, composition, dance kinesiology, and world dance forms such as African, Latin, Asian, and Southeast-Asian diasporas.
