Technician: Research (Environmental & Evolutionary Biology)

Are you a versatile scientist passionate about the intersection of evolutionary biology, behavioural ecology, and environmental health?

The University of Sheffield School of Biosciences is home to one of the largest and most vibrant groups of animal and plant scientists in the UK. We are seeking a collaborative Research Technician to join Dr Nicola Hemmings’ research group within the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) Research Cluster. This is a unique opportunity to provide multidisciplinary technical support for research into the impact of environmental stressors on biological systems.

As a key member of our research team, you will bridge the gap between rigorous laboratory analysis and dynamic fieldwork. You will support our investigation into environmental contaminants by leading the extraction and identification of microplastics from biological samples, including avian and reptilian eggs.

Your work will be diverse and highly integrated, ranging from field-based sample collection to laboratory chemical digestions and fluorescence microscopy. You will play a fundamental role in data management and science communication, helping us translate complex findings into peer-reviewed manuscripts and engaging audio-visual media for the public.

Applicants must have experience equivalent to Level 3 (BTEC/A Level) or above in a relevant field such as evolutionary biology or reproductive biology, along with excellent practical and theoretical knowledge and recent experience of wet lab protocols, microscopy, contaminant analysis, laboratory health and safety, managing tasks in both lab and field environments, and proven ability to collect and manage complex data.

What we offer:The University of Sheffield is a remarkable place to work. Our people are at the heart of everything we do. EEB is a thriving and exciting research hub and we are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive work environment. You will have access to exceptional facilities and become part of a community dedicated to tackling the world’s biggest environmental challenges.

The University of Sheffield offers a fantastic range of benefits including a highly competitive annual leave entitlement (with the ability to purchase more), a generous pensions scheme, flexible working opportunities, a commitment to your development and wellbeing, a wide range of retail discounts, and much more. Find out more at sheffield.ac.uk/jobs/benefits and join us to become part of something special.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
