Temporary Pre-Health Advisor
PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Dean of Natural Sciences, the Temporary Pre-Health Advisor will provide advising support to pre-health students preparing for professional school applications during the spring 2026 semester. This position will focus on individualized advising, application review, and group workshops to guide students through the preparation and submission process for health professions programs.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Offer one-hour advising appointments per week for spring 2026 applicants, assisting with personal statements, application materials, and overall application development.
- Provide approximately six hours of advising per week for non-applicant students (20-minute sessions each), supporting general preparation, experience building, and academic planning.
- Advise students on topics including:
- School selection and admissions strategy
- Preparation for situational judgment tests (SJTs)
- Identifying meaningful experiences (clinical, research, community service)
- Requesting and managing letters of recommendation (LORs)
- Staying informed on current trends and requirements in the health professions application process
- Maintain accurate attendance records for all appointments.
- Host workshops about centralized applications and preparing to apply; develop event marketing and track attendance.
- Participate in an introductory meeting at the start of the term to share background and advising approach with students and staff.
- Active support for the College's Principles of Community and Institutional Values in the performance of job duties.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
- Ability to create and follow written and oral laboratory instructions.
- Ability to follow Scripps policies and procedures.
- Ability to perform routine tasks efficiently.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries with students, staff, and faculty.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to be detail oriented to complete tasks.
- Ability to work independently with little direction and receive/respond to feedback.
- Strong understanding of the medical and health professions application processes (e.g., AMCAS, AACOMAS, AADSAS, CASPA).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in reviewing and editing personal statements and application materials.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in relevant field required, or any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability to perform the job.
Prior experience advising or mentoring pre-health or pre-professional students is strongly preferred.
LICENSES / CERTIFICATES:
None.
HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:
This is a temporary status, part-time (no more than 12 hours per week), non-benefits-eligible, non-exempt position. This position is expected to begin in January 2026 and end on or before May 15, 2026, based upon the return of the incumbent, and may be extended based upon mutual agreement by both parties.
The regular hours for this position will vary due to the needs of the College or department. This is position is not eligible for remote work.
Hourly rate range: $35.00-$40.00. The hourly rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
