Established in 2025, the School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at HKU represents an unprecedented joint-force across the Faculties of Medicine, Engineering, Dentistry and Science—uniting their strengths in a single vibrant research and education hub. As one of HKU’s newest academic units, SBME provides an unparalleled platform for interdisciplinary translational research and innovation. This collaborative environment empowers researchers to break new ground at the convergence of biomedicine and engineering, driving transformative breakthroughs that will redefine healthcare both locally and globally.

Applications are invited for appointments as Tenure-track Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor (several posts) at the School of Biomedical Engineering (Ref.: 533443) to commence as soon as possible. The appointment rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The appointment will initially be made on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract subject to satisfactory performance. Exceptionally outstanding candidates at Professor/Associate Professor level may be considered for appointment on tenure terms, subject to University’s approval.

Applicants should possess: (i) a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in a related discipline; (ii) a strong track record of high-quality research as indicated by publication record and external grants; (iii) evidence of international recognition and a strong record of scholarship with a demonstrated ability to work across disciplines towards new research initiatives; (iv) a strong commitment to engaging students in inquiry-based learning at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

For the Assistant Professor position, priority will be given to applicants who show strong potential to establish an impactful research program and contribute meaningfully to the academic mission of SBME. Candidates should demonstrate promise in teaching and mentoring, a clear research direction aligned with the School’s strategic priorities, and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration. A record of publishing in reputable journals, early success in securing research funding, and engagement in professional service will be viewed favorably.

For the Associate Professor position, priority will be given to applicants who have established a nationally recognized research program, a proven track record in teaching and student mentorship, and a well-articulated vision for advancing research within SBME. Ideal candidates will have published in high-impact journals, successfully secured and managed externally research funding from federal and/or industrial sources, and contributed meaningfully to their professional community through service and engagement.

For the Professor position, priority will be given to applicants with an internationally recognized research program, an outstanding record of teaching and mentoring, and a forward-looking vision for driving research excellence at SBME. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a sustained history of high-impact publications, significant external research funding, leadership in major university research initiatives, and substantial professional service. Preference will be given to candidates who have shown leadership in collaborative and interdisciplinary research.

Successful applicants are expected to establish an innovative research programme at the forefront of biomedical engineering. Applicants working in fields across the spectrum of biomedical engineering are eligible, and we particularly welcome applicants working in the fields of immunoengineering, medical robotics, tissue engineering, neuroengineering, microfluidics technologies and AI biomedicine. Appointees will be expected to obtain significant external research funding and be open to interdisciplinary collaboration. They will participate in teaching biomedical engineering subjects in the SBME undergraduate degree programme in the fields of their expertise. In the course of their career development, they are expected to make substantial contributions to the School’s strategic goals in academic and research collaborations locally, regionally and internationally.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointments will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of the basic salary. Housing benefits will also be provided as applicable.
