Position Description
Safely performs journeyperson level tasks in the fabrication, construction, maintenance, alteration and repair of fixtures, equipment, structures, buildings, and built-in components for Texas Tech facilities. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Major/Essential Functions
Access Control, Locks & Security Systems
- Installs, maintains, and services campus access control systems, CCTV components, electronic locking devices, and exit hardware to ensure secure and reliable building access.
- Performs repair and troubleshooting of locks, door hardware, and security devices to restore proper functionality and safety.
- Interprets system schematics and manufacturer specifications to support accurate installation and configuration.
Doors, Operators & ADA Compliance
- Installs and adjusts door closers and automatic door operators to ensure proper operation and compliance with ADA accessibility standards.
- Conducts functional testing and preventative adjustments to maintain smooth and compliant door operation.
Key Management & Safe Operations
- Manufactures, issues, and tracks new keys in accordance with departmental security protocols.
- Operates key cutting machines, mortising machines, drill press, grinders, and hand tools to fabricate and service locking hardware.
- Opens locked doors and safes when combinations or keys are unavailable using approved methods.
- Changes safe and mailbox combinations as requested and documents all changes per security procedures.
Required Qualifications
Proficiency in written and mathematical skills as may be reflected in the completion of high school or equivalent. Three years experience in designated trade or licensed journeyperson.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting electronic access control systems, CCTV, and electronic locking hardware
- Working knowledge of door hardware, locking mechanisms, and exit devices, including repair and replacement techniques
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer specifications for accurate system installation
- Familiarity with ADA standards related to door operators and accessibility compliance
- Proficiency in the use of key cutting machines, locksmith tools, and general shop equipment
- Strong attention to detail and adherence to security protocols, including key control, access tracking, and documentation
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical and electronic system issues
- Ability to work independently while maintaining safety, reliability, and customer service standards in an active campus environment
Pay Range
$16.39 - $21.30 - $26.25
