The Department at the University of Vienna is the largest academic center covering all fields relating to the German language and German-language literatures. The core areas are Modern German Literature, Medieval German Language and Literature, Germanic Linguistic, German as a Foreign and Second Language, and German Teaching Methodology. In addition, the areas of Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, Media Theory, Literary Theory, and Literature for Children and Young Adults are well established. More than 5000 students are enrolled.
Your personal sphere of play:
This position is based in the German as a Second Language Research Group at the Institute of German Studies. The Institute of German Studies at the University of Vienna is Austria’s largest research and educational center for all aspects of the German language and German-language literature.
In the German as a Second Language working group (headed by Prof. Dr. İnci Dirim), you can expect a small, dedicated team, a supportive work environment, and the opportunity to contribute and implement your own ideas.
The position involves contributing to the disciplinary development of German as a Second Language in both research and teaching. The focus will be on research into the professional development of school teachers. Additionally, an approach grounded in migration pedagogy is expected.
Your future tasks:
Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:
- Working at the Institute of German Studies, Department of German as a Foreign and Second Language, German as a Second Language Working Group
- Contributing to research, teaching, and administration
- Developing and expanding an independent research profile
- Participation in research projects and academic studies
- Contribution to publications
- Assistance in organizing conferences, symposia, and other events
- Independent teaching of courses in the field of German as a Second Language
- Examination duties, particularly for theses
- Student advising
- Participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance
- Project proposal development and acquisition of external funding
- Opportunity to write a habilitation thesis
This is part of your personality:
- Completed doctorate/PhD with a focus on German as a Second Language
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Teaching experience in the field of German as a Second Language
- Teaching experience in university and non-university settings related to migration
- Research experience
- Experience with e-learning
- Ability to work in a team
- Knowledge of university processes and structures
Expected:
- Empirical research focusing on German as a second language, language education, and language support in the context of schools as educational institutions
- Theoretical and practical work experience in the context of migration and education
- Experience in securing external funding
- Migration-focused pedagogical approach
- High social/communicative skills
