The Institute of Physical Chemistry (Faculty of Chemistry)is seeking to fill a position of University Assistant (pre doc).
The group for Chemical Sensing and Rapid Analysis at the University of Vienna designs novel biomimetic recognition materials targeting analytes reaching from small molecules to nanostructures and biological systems. It is internationally reputed in the areas of polymer-based and self-organized sensor layers. The position is advertised for four years. Initially, the contract will be issued for 1.5 years, which is automatically extended to four years, if the employer does not state that it does not want to extend it after 12 months.
Your future tasks:
The successful candidate will focus on synthesizing novel molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) for environmentally relevant analytes (pesticides, PFAS) and on characterizing them as sensor materials (thin film, particles) in the liquid phase, mainly in mass-sensitive and electrochemical detection, including assay formats relying on MIP nanoparticles. This also comprises applying different instrumental techniques (for instance scanning probe microscopy, vibrational spectroscopy, DLS) to characterize the materials and their interactions with the analyte.
Main tasks:
- the advertised position includes participation in research projects / research studies, teaching, administrative tasks
- contribution to publications / scientific articles / conference presentations
We expect that you:
- complete your dissertation agreement within 12 months
- join the Doctoral School for Chemistry at the University of Vienna
- participate in teaching and independently deliver courses in accordance with the collective agreement
- supervise students

Your competencies:
- Masters‘ degree in Chemistry from a University. (MUST CRITERION)
- Experience in chemical sensing. (TARGET CRITERION)
- Experience with (polymeric) materials. (TARGET CRITERION)
- Fluency in English language in written and oral (MUST CRITERION)
- Very good knowledge of German language in written and oral (MUST CRITERION)
- Experience in synthesizing polymers is an advantage.
