University assistant predoctoral

Your personal sphere of influence:

As one of Europe’s largest research institutions, the University of Vienna offers an exceptionally broad range of disciplines and, as a result, an outstanding infrastructure for research in the humanities. For two University Assistant Plus (praedoc) positions in the field of archival science and one University Assistant Plus (praedoc) position in the field of Austrian history (from the Middle Ages to the 20th century), we are looking for innovative and critical researchers who are currently employed at an Austrian archive and can reduce their work obligations for the duration of their dissertation (four years). You will pursue your doctorate at the University of Vienna as part of the Archival Science or Austrian History research group at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research, working closely with colleagues in Austria and with international research networks.

This call for applications is specifically aimed at archivists who, with a 20-hour-per-week position at the University of Vienna, can complete their doctorate within four years.

The contract term for employment is four years. Initially limited to one and a half years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to four years unless the employer issues a notice of non-renewal within the first twelve months.

Your future tasks:

You will actively participate in research and teaching. Your main responsibilities include:

  • Drafting, researching, and completing a dissertation, which includes signing a dissertation agreement with the faculty within the first twelve months
  • Developing an independent teaching and research profile
  • Helping to organize conferences, symposia, and workshops
  • Independently teaching courses totaling a maximum of 6 SWS spread over 4 years, including examination duties and student advising

This is part of your personality:

  • You are employed as an archivist in an Austrian archive in the higher archival service (Höherer Archivdienst) and your employer is willing to reduce your working hours to a maximum of 20 hours per week (with a corresponding reduction in pay)
  • You have completed a master’s degree in “Auxiliary Historical Sciences and Archival Science” prior to starting the position, preferably with a focus on archival science
  • You have a planned dissertation project on a topic in the field of archival science or Austrian history and are pursuing a doctorate under the supervision of a team or with the support of a Thesis Advisory Committee
  • You are a team player and are interested in actively participating in the life of the institute
