The Counseling Center at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is seeking a University Counselor in Residence. This is a 10-month position provided with a residence on campus: on-campus living with students is required. The University Counselor in Residence reports to the Director of Counseling. The fundamental mission of the WSSU Counseling Center is to assist students in developing a broader awareness of self while facing and negotiating challenges and obstacles during their stay at Winston-Salem State University.
Responsibilities of the University Counselor in Residence include:
- Providing therapy and counseling services to individuals, couples, and groups
- Developing and delivering psychoeducational programming and presentations on topics such as academic problems, alcohol and substance abuse, stress and anxiety, identity issues, eating disorders, and depression
- Providing crisis intervention counseling and responding to emergencies
- Planning and executing outreach activities on topics such as substance abuse, test anxiety, stress management, and severe mental illness
- Providing professional support services to faculty and staff regarding student concerns
- Planning and implementing new counseling programs and services
- Assisting in planning and executing university wide programs, orientation, freshman assembly, freshman seminar, and classroom guidance information sessions for new and returning students
- Assisting in the administration of the University Counseling Center

Department Required Skills
- Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or a related field
- 4-5 years of relevant experience
- Associate or Fully Licensed therapist in the state of North Carolina
Applicants with provisional licenses must achieve full licensure within two years of hiring
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends.
- On-campus living is required; housing is provided as part of the position.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
- Excellent written communication skills
- Creative problem-solving abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities
- Demonstrated proficiency at public speaking and presentations
- High degree of discretion and commitment to maintaining confidentiality
Required License or Certification
- Associate or Fully Licensed therapist in the state of North Carolina
