Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The main purpose of the UNC Greensboro Police Officer position is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff and visitors of University of North Carolina Greensboro through law enforcement and crime prevention. Our officers and employees are highly trained and dedicated individuals whose personal mission is to make sure campus community’s experience at UNCG is not only memorable and successful, but also safe. We are counting on everyone to not only take responsible for their own safety but the safety of others. The police department offers these and other programs to help our Spartans achieve a safe and secure community.
Position Summary:
Positions in this banded class direct public safety operations for a University campus or State agency. Employees are responsible for the administration of law enforcement divisions and/or law enforcement auxiliary service units such as patrol, criminal investigation, K-9 units, telecommunication, accreditation, and crime prevention education/outreach. Duties include but are not limited to developing policy and procedures, planning and organizing operations, managing budget development and related resource allocation, and maintaining appropriate relationships with local and State law enforcement agencies and the media. Typically reports directly to the Division Commander or Assistant Chief of Police depending on the department’s organizational structure. Work performed in this career band differs from the Public Safety Supervisor since it involves oversight of multiple units, and a higher level of authority.
Senior Police Supervisor: Positions at this level typically lead a uniform patrol shift or squad or serve in a supervisory capacity in criminal investigations in a plainclothes assignment. May also serve in a supervisory capacity in other specialized units outside uniform patrol or criminal investigations at the discretion of the agency head.
Minimum Qualifications:
A minimum of a bachelors degree or greater and 6 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience or an associates degree and 8 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. At least 3 years of the experience requirement must have been in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Sergeant or greater. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe.

Preferred Qualifications:
Candidate must be at least 20 years of age at time of appointment; candidate must meet physical and psychological requirements of the North Carolina Criminal Education and Standards Commission, which includes a physical exam, medical exam, psychological exam, and drug test. In addition, the UNC Greensboro Police department requires candidates to possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License; pass an in-depth background investigation, which includes driver’s history and criminal history with no felony convictions, psychological testing, drug screening, and physical. Must successfully complete the university’s orientation course and a twelve-week department field training program during probationary period; must satisfactorily complete the state mandated probationary period. The selected candidate must possess the ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing and deal with the public and representatives of the criminal justice system in a professional manner. The candidate(s) for this position will be considered an ‘ESSENTIAL’ Emergency Duty Employee. This means that the position is one that is necessary to ensure University operations continue uninterrupted during periods of adverse weather and/or other emergency situations, including those that require the University to close. As such the employee in this position will be required to report to work according to their usual schedule, or upon notification to report outside of their usual work schedule.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Coordinator and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.

Essential Tasks:
The Patrol Lieutenant provides direct supervision and leadership to four Patrol Sergeants and their assigned squads, ensuring that each team is properly staffed, equipped, and operationally prepared to deliver effective police services. The Lieutenant monitors patrol activity, response times, proactive enforcement efforts, and community engagement initiatives to ensure consistency in performance and service across all shifts. Through the strategic allocation of personnel and resources, the Lieutenant coordinates operations between squads, addresses emerging issues, and maintains operational continuity throughout the division. This position also serves as the command-level decision maker during patrol operations, critical incidents, special events, and other significant situations requiring leadership, coordination, and sound judgment

Essential Tasks:
The Patrol Lieutenant is responsible for the professional development, supervision, and performance management of Patrol Sergeants and their assigned personnel. The position provides coaching and mentorship to Sergeants in the areas of leadership, accountability, decision-making, and supervisory effectiveness while evaluating performance and providing corrective guidance when necessary. The Lieutenant works to prepare Sergeants for future promotional and leadership opportunities by fostering professional growth and developing organizational competencies. In addition, the Lieutenant oversees personnel management functions within the Patrol Division, including conducting or reviewing performance evaluations, addressing employee concerns, providing counseling and performance coaching, recommending disciplinary action when appropriate, and ensuring accountability for departmental standards and expectations. The position monitors attendance, scheduling, staffing levels, leave utilization, and overtime expenditures to maintain operational readiness and effective workforce management. The Lieutenant also participates in onboarding efforts while promoting consistency in expectations, operational standards, and organizational culture across all patrol squads to ensure a unified, professional, and effective approach.

Essential Tasks:
The Patrol Lieutenant is responsible for analyzing operational performance and ensuring compliance with departmental standards, laws, and accreditation requirements to promote effective, accountable, and data-driven policing. The position routinely reviews crime statistics, calls for service, officer activity, and other operational metrics to identify trends, evaluate patrol effectiveness, and develop deployment strategies that address emerging issues and community needs. Based on this analysis, the Lieutenant recommends operational improvements, briefs command staff on patrol-related concerns and trends, and assists in developing strategies to enhance public safety on campus. The Lieutenant also ensures that Sergeants and officers comply with departmental policies, state law, accreditation standards, and university requirements by reviewing use-of-force incidents, vehicle pursuits, complaints, arrests, and other critical reports. Through ongoing oversight and analysis, the Lieutenant evaluates trends that may create organizational liability, reveal training deficiencies, or require policy adjustments, while promoting operational accountability, procedural justice, and professional standards throughout the Patrol Division.
