Research project or operation

The postdoctoral researcher recruited as part of the IDEX OPTIMUS project will have the main task of setting up and operating a Thomson spectrometer equipped with active-pixel CMOS (MAPS) detectors for the characterisation of ion beams produced by laser-plasma acceleration. Working alongside engineers and researchers at LabCom LAMAPS, he or she will participate in the integration and optimisation of the detectors, and will subsequently lead experimental measurement campaigns at the CYRCÉ…

(Strasbourg) and VEGA3 (Spain) facilities. The role involves a significant amount of experimental data analysis aimed at reconstructing and interpreting the energy distributions of the detected particles, as well as evaluating the performance of the different generations of detectors developed within the project.

Activities

Main activities:

Participate in the integration of active-pixel CMOS (MAPS) detectors into a Thomson spectrometer designed to characterise ion beams produced by laser-plasma acceleration.
Developing and implementing procedures for the acquisition and processing of experimental data.
Calibrate and characterise the detectors using particle beams.
Prepare, implement and conduct experimental campaigns at the CYRCÉ (Strasbourg) and VEGA3 (Salamanca, Spain) facilities.
Analyse the acquired data to reconstruct the energy distributions of the detected particles and evaluate the performance of the developed systems.
Compare the performance of different generations of CMOS detectors in an environment heavily disrupted by electromagnetic pulses (EMP).
Present the results at project meetings, scientific conferences and in international publications.

Related activities:

Participate in the design and optimisation of the detectors and their readout electronics in collaboration with the C4PI team
Contribute to the development of software tools for data acquisition, visualisation and analysis.
Draft technical and scientific reports.
Monitor scientific and technological developments in the fields of CMOS detectors and laser-plasma acceleration.

Skills

Knowledge:

Physics of particle detectors and scientific instrumentation.
Experimental techniques in vacuum environments.
Data analysis and statistical methods.
General knowledge of electronics and measurement instrumentation.
Knowledge of active-pixel CMOS sensors (MAPS) would be an advantage.
Knowledge of the field of laser-plasma acceleration would be an advantage.

Operational skills:

Design and implement complex experimental set-ups.
Carry out measurement campaigns and monitor their progress.
Analyse and interpret experimental data.
Draft technical reports and scientific publications in English.
Present and promote scientific findings orally.
Work in an international collaborative environment.

Personal skills:

Scientific rigour and organisational skills.
Ability to conduct research independently.
Ability to work in a team and to communicate effectively.
Proactive approach and ability to take the initiative.
Ability to adapt to a variety of experimental environments.
