HKUST is seeking a dedicated full-time Veterinarian / Veterinary Manager to join our Laboratory Animal Facility team. This role focuses on promoting and safeguarding the welfare of research animals, ensuring compliance with international standards and institutional policies. The successful candidate will work closely with the Attending Veterinarian, researchers, veterinary staff, and animal care personnel to implement best practices in animal welfare and ethical research.
The position primarily involves post-approval monitoring in the central animal facility and across animal research areas within the institution. Experience in auditing and animal welfare oversight is preferred.
Key Responsibilities
Animal Welfare Oversight:
- Monitor and ensure housing, environmental enrichment, and behavioral management programs support species-appropriate physical health and behavioral well-being
Ethical Compliance:
- Assist the AV in collaborating with the Animal Ethic Committee and the University to review protocols, advise on humane endpoints, and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
Behavioral Assessment & Enrichment:
- Develop and implement species-specific enrichment plans; assess stress indicators and recommend refinements.
Training & Education:
- Lead the training program to research staff and technicians on welfare principles, humane handling, and refinement techniques.
Post-Approval Monitoring:
- Participate in regular audits and inspections to ensure ongoing compliance with welfare standards.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of welfare assessments, interventions, and compliance reports.
Qualifications
- DVM or equivalent veterinary degree; Must be registrable with the Veterinary Surgeons Board (VSB) of Hong Kong.
- At least five years of work experience as a registered Veterinarian, preferably with some experience in laboratory animal medicine or animal welfare programs; experience with IACUC processes and enrichment strategies is highly desirable.
- Fluent in written and spoken English, Conversational level of Cantonese/Chinese.
- Basic understanding of animal welfare principles and behavioral observation and willingness to learn regulatory compliance and enrichment strategies. The candidate should have a strong interest in laboratory animal medicine and ethical care, with good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a research environment.
(Duration: 2 years, renewable)
