Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for an Veterinary Assistant to perform a variety of tasks related to the care and treatment of animal patients. This position assists in the monitoring and treatment for all patients admitted in the hospital.

This position involves direct contact with animals susceptible to rabies. Employees in this role must complete a rabies pre-exposure vaccination series and maintain adequate rabies antibody titer (≥0.5 IU/mL) as recommended by CDC guidelines.
Auburn University will cover the cost of the rabies vaccination series, periodic titer checks, and any necessary boosters.
Responsibilities
- Provide exceptional care to patients and compassion to clients of the JT Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital.
- Assists with ocular exams in other species: raptors, farm animals, canines and felines.
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively individually as well as with team-members in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment.
- Ophthalmic instrumentation and equipment care.
- Assist with the examination, treatment, and monitoring of equine patients, including handling and restraining horses safely and effectively.
- Perform and/or assist with diagnostic testing (Schirmer Tear Testing, Tonometry, Ocular Ultrasounds, Electroretinogram testing, etc.).
- Care for and monitor the condition of animals before, during, and/or after surgical procedures.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, vaccinations, and other treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.
- Continuously monitor patients’ vital signs, responses to treatment, and overall progress, providing updates to veterinarians and adjusting care as needed.
- May triage phone calls from referring veterinarians/clients as well as schedule appointments for diagnostic procedures under the direction of a veterinarian. Advise and educate animal owners.
- Work collaboratively with veterinary students, interns, and other staff to provide comprehensive care and support for educational activities.
- Ensure the cleanliness and proper maintenance of medical equipment, treatment areas, and general hospital facilities.
Qualifications
Level II:
High school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of experience in the care and comfort of animals.
Level III :
High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience in the care and comfort of animals.
Substitutions allowed for Experience: When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
