Under the authority of the President, Vice-Chancellor, Dean & CEO, the Vice-President, Research and Graduate Studies (RGS) is a senior academic leader accountable for advancing NOSM University’s research, academic and organizational objectives. As a member of the Executive Group, the Vice-President, RGS plays a pivotal role in shaping the University’s research and graduate studies agenda in alignment with NOSM University’s vision, mission, values, and social accountability mandate.

The Vice-President, RGS provides strategic leadership in planning, developing, and continuously strengthening research and graduate studies across Northern Ontario. The role also carries executive oversight of the Research Services Office, Graduate Studies Office, the Health Sciences Library, the Data Stewardship Office, as well as relevant academic and administrative leaders. The Vice-President, RGS provides administrative oversight for the Research Chairs program and other relevant Academic Chairs and collaborates with Chair holders to support institutional alignment and shared priorities, without exercising academic supervision over their research programs or scholarly activity. When designated, the Vice-President will also serve as the Acting for the President during a planned absence of the President, or when delegated by the Board when the Presidency is vacant or when the President is unable to act.

This position is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position with dedicated time allocated for research.

This position is not eligible for tenure.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Tasks include but are not limited to the following:

  • Leads the development and implementation of a five-year strategic plan for Research and Graduate Studies, aligned with the University’s strategic plan and annual operational priorities.
  • Leads the development and execution of a comprehensive institutional research funding strategy, including diversification of revenue streams, advancement and philanthropic partnerships, and achievement of research revenue targets.
  • Provides strategic leadership and trusted advice to the President on all matters related to research and graduate studies.
  • Oversees day-to-day operational management of the research and graduate studies portfolio, ensuring effective delivery of research and graduate programming.
  • Represents NOSM University with key external stakeholders at the regional, provincial, national, and international levels.
  • Assumes the President’s responsibilities during the President’s and other Vice-Presidents’ absences, as requested.
  • Demonstrated success leading large-scale, multi-investigator, or institutional research funding initiatives.
  • Builds and sustains collaborative partnerships that advance the University’s vision and mission, strengthening research networks across Northern Ontario to address priority health needs of communities.
  • Provides administrative oversight and governance of research centres —including the Dr. Gilles Arcand Centre for Health Equity—and supports centre directors in meeting institutional goals and performance expectations.
  • Creates an environment for learning and inquiry by fostering strong relationships with funding agencies, government bodies, Non-Government Organizations, and research institutions.
  • Provides strategic leadership for NOSM University’s institutional research strategy and research priorities across all divisions.
  • Collaborates with Research Chair and Academic Chair holders to support alignment with institutional priorities, funder requirements, and governance frameworks, without directing or supervising research programs.
  • Ensures institutional stewardship of Research and relevant Academic Chair programs, including compliance with funder, donor, and policy obligations, and the sustainability and integrity of Chair appointments.
  • Provides executive leadership to the units within the Research and Graduate Studies portfolio, including the Health Sciences Library, the Research Services Office, Graduate Studies Office, the Data Stewardship Office, and associated academic and administrative leaders.
  • Leads the development and administrative oversight of current and future graduate studies programs, including the Master of Medical Studies Program, in collaboration with program leadership and academic governance bodies.
  • Ensures a comprehensive framework is in place for responsible research conduct, ethics, animal care, administration, compliance, and governance, including oversight of research integrity and regulatory requirements.
  • Develops and implements an integrated data management strategy to support research quality, accreditation, and health research.
  • Represents the University at provincial, national, and international forums, advancing its reputation and partnerships.
  • Champions strategies to recruit, support, and retain researchers, faculty and professional librarians, including early-career scholars –and supports the research enterprise across the Clinical, Human and Medical Sciences Divisions
  • Liaises with external research institutes, hospitals, health system organizations to align institutional collaborations in the areas of research and graduate studies
  • Leads committees and working groups as required in support of research and graduate studies.
  • Contributes to NOSM University’s community-engaged research, education and social accountability mandate driving meaningful change in Northern Ontario’s rural, remote, Indigenous, and Francophone communities
  • Other duties as determined and assigned by the President.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • MD with additional research related graduate degree, appropriate graduate training and research portfolio or PhD in a health-related discipline
  • Must have a NOSM University Faculty Appointment or qualify, apply for and accept a Faculty Appointment in the Clinical, Human or Medical Sciences Division.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated academic leadership experience.
  • Experience with labour relations and the interpretation and application of Collective Agreements
  • Experience in health or medical research, including securing funding, publishing, and fostering collaborative research environments.
  • Demonstrated experience providing fiscal leadership for a complex research or academic portfolio, including budgeting, resource allocation, financial oversight, and alignment of funding decisions with institutional research priorities
  • Proven track record with national and international research granting agencies.
  • Experience in academic administration including research within a university.
  • Significant management experience in academic settings, including supervision of diverse teams.
  • Record of scholarly achievement as evidenced by major funding and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience leading and supporting graduate studies programs.
  • Experience engaging with Indigenous and Francophone communities and driving meaningful change in Northern Ontario’s rural, remote, Indigenous, and/or Francophone communities would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to innovative research strategies in northern, rural, and remote environments would be considered an asset.
  • Understanding of knowledge translation and implementation strategies for community impact
  • Understanding of data governance and academic library operations.

Language

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
