Visiting Assistant Professor of Art (Studio Art)
The Department of Art offers majors in Studio Art, Photography, Graphic Design, and Animation. We offer an MFA in Art and Social Practice. The Dana G. Hoyt Fine Arts Building includes state-of-the-art lecture halls and classrooms, studios, computer labs, and galleries. In addition to the University Art Gallery on campus, the Department exhibits student work at a Satellite Gallery in downtown Huntsville and has MFA studios in the Natural Science and Art Research Center a few blocks away. Sam Houston State University is located 70 miles north of Houston in Huntsville, TX, surrounded by the Sam Houston National Forest.
Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:
The Department of Art at Sam Houston State University invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Art, with an anticipated start date of August 2026. The successful candidate will maintain an interdisciplinary studio practice and demonstrate the capacity to teach across a range of areas, including drawing, installation, painting, photography, new media, performance and video art, printmaking, social practice, or professional practices in art. Preferred candidates will be artists engaged in new media, installation, performance, video, or hybrid forms, as well as those whose work reflects innovative approaches that extend the boundaries of traditional media. Experience in social practice with a demonstrated commitment to integrating community engagement into the curriculum is desirable. Primary responsibilities include teaching a 3/3 course load and contributing to departmental service through committee participation.

Candidates must possess an MFA in art or terminal degree in a related field.
Experience Required for the Position (Faculty Positions Only):
Teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level is required. The successful candidate will have an ongoing, sustainable, and engaged art practice, and be prepared to be an active faculty member who is engaged with the department, college, university, local and professional communities.
