Position description

The University of California, Irvine School of Law invites applications for two Visiting Assistant Professors of Lawyering Skills/Visiting Professors of Lawyering Skills for the 2026-2027 school year. Both visits will be for the full year.

Lawyering Skills is a two semester, six-unit course that satisfies the Law School's 1L experiential course requirement for graduation, described below.

The first Visiting Professor of Lawyering Skills will teach the following courses:

1. Fall Semester: Two sections of Lawyering Skills I. These sections will be slightly smaller in size than other sections, with the total number of students in the two sections to be under or around 45 students. In the fall semester, the focus is teaching skills that all lawyers use, such as client counseling and interviewing, legal analysis and communication, and extensive legal research.
2. Spring Semester: Two sections of Lawyering Skills II. These sections will be slightly smaller in size than other sections, with the total number of students in the two sections to be under or around 45 students. In the spring semester, the focus is on more advanced legal research, analysis, and communication skills. UCI Law is piloting a program of specialized spring sections. All students in all sections will get experience in written and oral advocacy and continued instruction in more advanced legal research. Depending upon programmatic needs as determined by Associate Dean Rachel Croskery-Roberts, the visitor will teach specialized sections related to appellate advocacy, pretrial practice, or transactional practice.

The Second Visiting Professor of Lawyering Skills will teach the following course(s):

1. Fall Semester: One section of Lawyering Skills I. In the fall semester, the focus is teaching skills that all lawyers use, such as client counseling and interviewing, legal analysis and communication, and extensive legal research.
2. Spring Semester: One section of Lawyering Skills II. UCI Law is piloting a program of specialized spring sections. All students in all sections will get experience in written and oral advocacy and continued instruction in more advanced legal research. Depending upon programmatic needs as determined by Associate Dean Rachel Croskery-Roberts, the visitor will teach a specialized section on appellate advocacy, pretrial practice, or transactional practice.
3. Fall or Spring Semester: Another 1L course or core upper-level course (e.g., remedies, evidence, civil procedure, contracts, etc.). The decision for an upper division course will be made in consultation with Associate Dean Rachel Croskery-Roberts and Vice Dean Trilby Robinson-Dorn.
