Visiting Assistant Professor of Music - Music Education
Job Description Summary:
Oakland University's School of Music, Theatre and Dance invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Education position, beginning August 15, 2026 through August 14, 2027, with annual renewal of contract subject to approval.
In the area of music education, we are committed to supporting pre-service music educators in cultivating essential and diverse pedagogical approaches. Music education students develop vibrant, culturally responsive, artful music education programs that engage learners in meaningful ways. Pre-service music teachers learn to be increasingly true to themselves—their highest potentials and strengths—as well as sensitive to our diverse communities and world. Additionally, we are a faculty that strives to maintain deep, meaningful connections with our local music education community.
We seek a general music specialist with a PhD, DMA, or EdD in music education or conducting. Ideal candidates will demonstrate versatility in music teacher education contexts, as well as a strong commitment to teaching, recruiting and retention, and service to the profession.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Teach three undergraduate music education courses per semester, including but not limited to: general/elementary music methods, educational psychology, and teaching music students with exceptionalities
- Teach additional courses depending on the candidate's interests and expertise
- Supervise student teachers in general music field placements and co-teach student teaching seminar
Preferred Additional Responsibilities :
- Serve as area and field coordinator, placing and supporting student teachers or field observers in schools and serving as liaison between schools/district and the university
Minimum Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Earned PhD, DMA, or EdD in music education or conducting (ABD considered)
- Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching music education at the undergraduate level
- Specialization in general/elementary music
- At least 3–5 years full time k-12 music teaching experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supervising student teachers
- Evidence of successful teaching in diverse educational settings
- Commitment to continued professional growth in research and/or creative activity
- Experience teaching music education courses regarding students with exceptionalities
