Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology
Position Summary:
Wingate University seeks to hire a new colleague in Sociology to start in August 2026. This position will teach primarily sociology courses, with many of these courses also counting towards the bachelor of science in public health (BSPH) degree. We seek a candidate with strong interest and ability in undergraduate teaching for a full-time visiting position at the level of Visiting Assistant Professor.
The successful candidate will contribute to curricular design and assessment, teach primarily undergraduate courses, advise and mentor students, be team-oriented, and foster an inclusive and equitable classroom. The ideal candidate has experience teaching foundational courses such as Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, and/or Research Methods, as well as experience or interest in teaching courses such as Gender Roles in Society, Social Inequalities, Medical Sociology, Gender and Health, Sociology of Death and Dying, and Social Epidemiology courses, many of which count towards the BSPH degree and/or minors in medical sociology and women and gender studies. Graduate course teaching opportunities are also available based on expertise. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to balance excellence in teaching 4 courses (12 credit hours) per semester with research and service engagement.
Service responsibilities will include student advising and mentoring, departmental service, and committee service under Wingate University’s shared governance structure. A commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and evidence of scholarly potential is also preferred. Recent graduates and ABD applicants are also encouraged to apply.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach Introduction to Sociology and/or Social Problems
- Teach advanced Sociology courses
- Advise and mentor students
- Serve on departmental and university committees
- Regular, predictable attendance on campus
- Alignment with University mission, vision, and strategic roadmap
- Other job duties/responsibilities may be assigned
Qualifications and Experience:
- Preferred PhD in Sociology, MS required
- Experience teaching Introduction to Sociology and/or advanced Sociology courses
- Experience with face-to-face delivery of courses is preferred
- Evidence of scholarly potential
