Visiting Research Professor (East Asian Institute)

Job Description

Established in 1997, the East Asian Institute (EAI) at the National University of Singapore is a leading centre for academic and policy-oriented research on East Asia. The Institute focuses primarily on contemporary China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan), as well as Japan and the Korean Peninsula, and their linkages with each other and the global economy.

EAI maintains close collaborations with leading universities, think tanks, and international institutions, convenes high-level policy dialogues, and contributes to informed public discourse through rigorous, data-driven, and evidence-based research.

EAI invites applications from outstanding candidates for the position of Visiting Research Professor (Macroeconomics & International Finance). We are seeking a globally recognised scholar-practitioner with deep expertise in macroeconomic policy, international finance, and the dynamics of the East Asian and global economy. The successful candidate will bring a strong track record of policy engagement, research leadership, and intellectual contribution at the intersection of academia and policymaking.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and contribute to cutting-edge research on macroeconomic and structural issues, financial systems, and policy frameworks in East Asia and the global economy
  • Engage in policy-relevant analysis, particularly on the evolving global economic order, digital finance and AI, financial sector developments, and structural reforms
  • Contribute to the intellectual leadership of EAI through conferences, workshops, and high-level policy dialogues
  • Mentor junior researchers and collaborate across disciplines and institutions
  • Strengthen EAI’s global partnerships with international and regional organisations, central banks, and academic institutions

Requirements

  • PhD in Economics, International Finance, or a closely related field
  • Extensive senior-level research and policy experience (typically 20+ years) in macroeconomic policy, preferably at leading universities, international organisations, or central banks
  • Demonstrated expertise in macroeconomic, trade, investment, exchange rate policy, and macro-financial and macro-fiscal issues
  • Experience with emerging challenges including digital finance, AI, capital flows, and structural transformation
  • Strong familiarity with East Asian economies—especially China, Japan, and Korea—and their global linkages
  • Proven track record of high-impact publications and policy contributions
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills

The ideal candidate will combine analytical depth with practical policy experience, bringing insights shaped by direct involvement in economic policymaking at the country, regional, and global levels. Experience leading teams, advising on complex macro-fiscal, financial, and structural issues, and contributing to global policy frameworks will be highly valued.

A strong ability to translate complex economic analysis into actionable policy insights—while engaging effectively with both academic and policy audiences is essential.

Why Join EAI:

  • Opportunity to shape policy-relevant research at one of Asia’s leading institutes
  • Engagement with top policymakers, academics, and international organisations
  • Platform to influence debates on global economic governance and East Asia’s evolving role
  • Location in Singapore, a global hub for finance, policy, and research
