Visiting Scholar
Provides technical support for all activities associated with the barley breeding and genetics program. Responsibilities span laboratory, greenhouse, and field operations, with increased emphasis during peak planting and harvesting seasons.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
90% Field, Greenhouse, and Seed Operations
- Package, label, and manage seed inventory
- Perform planting, plot maintenance, and routine crop care
- Collect field and greenhouse notes and enter data accurately into tracking systems
- Harvest field and greenhouse-grown materials and conduct post-harvest processing
- Assist with the setup, operation, and routine maintenance of field equipment, including tractors, planters, combine harvesters, threshers, seed treaters, and other small farm equipment
- Manage planting and harvesting of greenhouse-grown materials
10% Laboratory Analysis
- Conduct analytical laboratory analyses of processed field materials
- Follow established protocols for sample handling, analysis, and documentation
Required Qualifications
- Experience working with plants in field and greenhouse environments
- Bachelor's degree in environmental health, environmental sustainability, or a closely related field.
- Ability to perform physical work associated with field, greenhouse, and laboratory operations
- Attention to detail in data collection and recordkeeping
- Ability to work independently and as part of a research team
