Web Software Developer (Accessibility)
Position Summary:
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Web Software Developer (Accessibility) within the Information Systems and Technology (IST) Central Core Department at the Rutgers Cancer Institute.
Rutgers Cancer Institute is seeking a Web Software Developer (Accessibility) for the Information Systems and Technology (IST) Department. This position will report to the Manager of Special Projects and will work closely with IST, OIT, and institutional stakeholders to advance digital accessibility initiatives across the Cancer Institute. This position is responsible for reviewing projects, applications, websites, systems, documents, and procurement activities for accessibility implications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Ensures information technology and accessibility standards are met with relation to websites and communication.
- Provides training and outreach, assists in the development of a risk-based approach to contract review, and develops associated assessment tools and other resources.
- Creates, maintains, and updates web content systems. Ensures web content is accurate and up to date. SME for web content and formatting.
- Creates awareness around IT accessibility and disability issues related to IT systems and processes.
- Develops and delivers training to members of Rutgers Cancer Institute community relating to accessibility.
- Reviews Rutgers Cancer Institute IT assets, such as sites, systems, applications, and documentation for accessibility issues and recommend remediations to provide a more accessible and inclusive experience.
- Works with IT staff on remediating source code for applications with accessibility issues.
- Maintains a library of shared source code to achieve a consistent accessibility baseline for in-house PHP applications.
- Maintains databases and server filesystems for shared and dynamic CSS, SVG, and JavaScript assets.
- Develops, maintains, and promotes the use of accessible Office document templates for Cancer Institute.
- Works with IST and OIT on procuring accessible hardware and software.
- Provides user accessibility support, including the facilitation of the University's accessibility barrier reporting.
- Performs accessibility testing, reviews vendor documentation, and makes recommendations on potential information technology purchases.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science or Technology plus three (3) years of experience in accessibility and /or web design required.
- Equivalent experience, education, and/or training demonstrating the ability to perform the essential duties of the position may be substituted for the degree requirement.
