Overview & History

The American Sociological Review, often abbreviated as ASR, is a bimonthly peer-reviewed journal that publishes original theoretical and empirical research across all areas of sociology. Launched in 1936 by the American Sociological Association, it replaced earlier publications to centralize high-quality scholarship. Over the decades, ASR has evolved to reflect shifting paradigms in social sciences, from structural functionalism to contemporary critical theories.

Key milestones include its role in post-World War II sociological expansion and the digital transition in the 2000s, enhancing global accessibility. Today, it serves as a vital resource for understanding societal dynamics, with issues tackling topics like globalization, digital societies, and social justice. Its enduring legacy lies in fostering debates that influence public policy and academic training.

Scope and Disciplines Covered

The journal encompasses the full spectrum of sociological inquiry, emphasizing works that advance theory, methodology, or substantive knowledge. It welcomes manuscripts on social structures, interactions, and processes at micro, meso, and macro levels.

Interdisciplinary overlaps with economics, psychology, and anthropology are encouraged when sociologically grounded.

Key Journal Metrics

These metrics underscore ASR's position as a top-tier outlet, with citations reflecting its intellectual impact.

Indexing and Abstracting

ASR is widely indexed, ensuring broad discoverability. It appears in Clarivate Web of Science, Scopus, Social Sciences Citation Index, and JSTOR. Additional coverage includes EBSCO, ProQuest, and Google Scholar. This extensive indexing facilitates tracking of research influence and integration into academic databases.

• Web of Science: Core collection for impact tracking.
• Scopus: Comprehensive abstracting for global reach.
• DOAJ: Not applicable as it's subscription-based, but open access options are indexed separately.

Publication Model and Fees

ASR operates on a hybrid model, with subscription access primary and gold open access available. Articles behind paywalls are accessible via institutional subscriptions, while OA choices promote wider dissemination. Article Processing Charges (APC) for open access stand at $3,000 USD, covering production and archiving. No fees for standard submissions; waivers may apply for corresponding authors from low-income countries per Sherpa/RoMEO policies.

This model balances sustainability with accessibility, aligning with ASA's mission.

Submission Process and Guidelines

Submissions are handled through the SAGE Track online portal at the journal's official site. Authors must prepare manuscripts per ASA style, double-spaced, anonymized for review. Length guidelines suggest 10,000 words maximum, including references. Ethical standards require IRB approval disclosures and conflict-of-interest statements.

Steps include: register an account, upload files, suggest reviewers, and track status. Revisions are common, emphasizing empirical robustness and theoretical novelty. For detailed guidelines, visit the official journal homepage.
