The Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice and Research traces its roots to 1949, when it launched as the Consulting Psychology Bulletin under the Division of Consulting Psychology of the American Psychological Association. Initially focused on bulletins and case studies, it provided early forums for sharing consulting experiences. By the 1990s, as consulting psychology matured, the journal transitioned to its current name in 1998, emphasizing peer-reviewed research over anecdotal reports.

Over decades, it has documented the field's growth from industrial psychology roots to modern organisational development. Milestones include special issues on diversity in consulting during the 2000s and digital transformation in the 2010s.
