Overview & History

The IEEE Internet of Things Journal was introduced in 2014 by IEEE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity's benefit. It emerged in response to the growing proliferation of IoT devices and the need for a specialized outlet to address the unique challenges and opportunities in this domain. Over the years, it has evolved from a nascent publication to a cornerstone of IoT scholarship, publishing thousands of articles that have influenced standards like those from IEEE 802.15.4 for low-power wireless networks.

Under the umbrella of IEEE's Communications Society and other technical councils, the journal has expanded its scope to include emerging topics such as 5G integration with IoT and blockchain for secure data exchange. Its history reflects the broader trajectory of IoT, from early visions of ubiquitous computing to today's deployment in smart cities and industrial automation. Key milestones include achieving indexed status in major databases shortly after launch and consistently improving citation metrics, which demonstrate its rising influence.

Scope and Disciplines Covered

The journal encompasses a wide array of topics centered on IoT ecosystems. It welcomes submissions on hardware design, software architectures, protocol developments, and application deployments. Disciplines range from computer engineering to information systems, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary work.

Key Journal Metrics

Indexing and Abstracting

The IEEE Internet of Things Journal is indexed in prestigious databases including Scopus, Web of Science (Clarivate), and IEEE Xplore. It is also abstracted in services like Google Scholar, ensuring broad discoverability. Researchers can access full texts via the official journal homepage, Scopus at Scopus, and Clarivate JCR for metrics.

Publication Model and Fees

As a hybrid journal, it offers both subscription-based and open access options. Authors can publish under traditional access with no fees or choose gold open access with an Article Processing Charge (APC) of approximately $2,195 USD. IEEE provides waivers for corresponding authors from low-income countries. Policies align with Sherpa/RoMEO green archiving, allowing preprint sharing.

Submission Process and Guidelines

Submissions are handled through the IEEE Manuscript Central portal, known as ScholarOne. Manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and formatted per IEEE guidelines, typically 8-12 pages double-column. The process involves initial screening, peer review by 3-5 experts, and revisions. Average time from submission to decision is 60-90 days. Detailed instructions are available on the official site.

Editorial Board Highlights

The board features luminaries like Editor-in-Chief Yuan Ting Zhang from City University of Hong Kong, alongside associate editors from MIT, Stanford, and Tsinghua University. Their expertise spans IoT hardware, software, and applications, ensuring balanced and expert evaluations.
