Overview & History

The Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development (JMCD) was founded in 1972 under the auspices of the American Counseling Association (ACA) to address the growing need for scholarship on multicultural issues in counseling. Initially launched as a response to the civil rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s, it aimed to highlight the role of culture in psychological development and therapeutic practices. Over the decades, JMCD has evolved from a niche publication to a vital resource, reflecting shifts in demographic diversity and global migration patterns.

Key milestones include its adoption of digital submission systems in the early 2000s and expanded coverage of intersectional topics like race, gender, and sexuality in counseling. Today, it publishes four issues annually, each featuring 4-6 peer-reviewed articles alongside book reviews and commentaries. The journal's history underscores its dedication to social justice, with past special issues on topics such as indigenous counseling methods and refugee mental health. This legacy positions JMCD as an essential archive for understanding the progression of multicultural counseling theories.
