Overview & History

Prehospital Emergency Care was established in 1996 as the official journal of the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) and the Prehospital Care Research Forum. It has evolved into a vital resource for the emergency medical services (EMS) community, chronicling advancements in out-of-hospital care over nearly three decades. Initially focused on clinical reports and case studies, the journal expanded to include original research, reviews, and policy analyses, reflecting the growing complexity of prehospital environments.

Under Taylor & Francis, it transitioned to a hybrid open access model, broadening accessibility while maintaining academic rigor. Milestones include special issues on topics like opioid overdose responses and mass casualty events, which have solidified its reputation. Today, it serves as a historical archive and forward-looking guide, helping researchers track the progression from basic life support innovations to integrated telehealth solutions in ambulances.
