Overview & History
Quaternary Science Reviews was launched in 1982 by Elsevier, filling a critical gap in the literature for comprehensive coverage of the Quaternary period—the last 2.6 million years of Earth's history. Founded to integrate diverse subfields, it quickly became a go-to resource for synthesizing data on ice ages, sea-level changes, and biodiversity shifts. Over four decades, the journal has evolved with scientific advancements, incorporating new techniques like radiocarbon dating and isotopic analysis.
Key milestones include special issues on major events like the Last Glacial Maximum and the Holocene transition, which have cited thousands of times. Under successive editors, it has maintained a balance between review articles and primary research, ensuring accessibility for both specialists and broader audiences in geoscience.
Scope and Disciplines Covered
Quaternary Science Reviews encompasses a wide array of topics within the Quaternary epoch, emphasizing interdisciplinary research. It covers paleoclimatology, geochronology, paleoecology, and tectonic influences on landscapes. Manuscripts should demonstrate novel insights into environmental reconstructions or methodological innovations.
| Discipline | Description |
|---|---|
| Geology | Studies of sediments, stratigraphy, and geomorphology from the Quaternary. |
| Paleontology | Fossil records and evolutionary responses to climatic shifts. |
| Climatology | Proxy data for past temperatures, precipitation, and atmospheric circulation. |
| Archaeology | Human adaptations and interactions with quaternary environments. |
Key Journal Metrics
Quaternary Science Reviews boasts robust metrics that underscore its influence in geoscience. The 2022 Impact Factor is 4.102, reflecting high citation rates. CiteScore stands at 9.8, with an h-index of 152, indicating sustained relevance.
| Metric | Value | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Impact Factor | 4.102 | 2022 |

Indexing and Abstracting
The journal is indexed in major databases, ensuring discoverability. It appears in Scopus, Web of Science (Science Citation Index Expanded), and GeoRef. Additional coverage includes Current Contents/Physical, Chemical & Earth Sciences and BIOSIS Previews, facilitating interdisciplinary access.
Publication Model and Fees
Quaternary Science Reviews operates a hybrid model, allowing subscription access with optional open access. The Article Publishing Charge (APC) for gold open access is approximately €3,090 (about $3,350 USD), covering production and dissemination. No fees for traditional subscription publication. Check Sherpa/RoMEO for self-archiving policies, which permit preprint sharing.
Submission Process and Guidelines
Submissions are handled via Elsevier's Editorial Manager system. Authors must adhere to word limits (up to 8,000 words for reviews), provide data availability statements, and follow ethical guidelines from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors where applicable. Peer review typically takes 2-4 months, with decisions emphasizing scientific merit.
Editorial Board Highlights
The editorial team comprises experts from leading institutions. Editor-in-Chief Dr. Chronis Tzedakis from University College London oversees strategy, supported by associate editors in paleoclimatology (e.g., from USGS) and geochronology (e.g., from ETH Zurich). This diverse board ensures global perspectives and expertise in Quaternary Science Reviews topics.
