Overview & History
Sedimentary Geology was founded in 1963 by Elsevier, emerging as a dedicated forum for sedimentological research amid growing interest in Earth's dynamic geological history. Initially focused on descriptive studies of sedimentary rocks, it evolved to incorporate quantitative analyses and integrative geoscience perspectives. Over the years, the journal has chronicled pivotal shifts, such as the integration of sequence stratigraphy in the 1980s and geochemical approaches in the 2000s.
Today, it publishes original research articles, reviews, and special issues that address contemporary challenges like sea-level rise and carbon sequestration in sedimentary basins. Its enduring legacy lies in fostering collaborations across disciplines, from paleontology to geophysics, making it indispensable for environmental earth geosciences scholars. Researchers often turn to its archives for foundational insights, underscoring its role in shaping the field.
Scope and Disciplines Covered
Sedimentary Geology encompasses a wide array of topics within environmental earth geosciences, emphasizing the processes that govern sediment transport, deposition, and preservation. It welcomes studies on clastic and carbonate systems, as well as non-marine and deep-sea environments.
| Discipline | Description |
|---|---|
| Sedimentology | Analysis of particle size, composition, and fabric in sedimentary deposits. |
| Stratigraphy | Chronostratigraphic frameworks and correlation of sedimentary sequences. |
| Paleoenvironments | Reconstruction of ancient depositional settings and climate proxies. |
| Diagenesis | Post-depositional alterations and their impact on reservoir quality. |
