Exploring Opportunities in Health Economics Research for PhD Candidates at Bond University
The field of health economics is gaining significant momentum in Australia as the nation addresses the challenges of an ageing population. At the forefront of this effort is Bond University’s Institute for Evidence-Based Healthcare, which is inviting expressions of interest for a PhD student position focused on frailty management within primary care settings. This opportunity forms part of a larger MRFF-funded initiative aimed at improving outcomes for older Australians through innovative decision-support tools.
Frailty impacts more than one in five Australians over the age of 65, leading to increased risks of disability, hospital admissions, and reduced quality of life. The PhD project will integrate economic evaluation with implementation science to assess costs and benefits of multicomponent interventions that can reverse or mitigate frailty effects. Candidates will work alongside leading experts including Professor Mark Morgan and Professor Ruth Hubbard, gaining hands-on experience in primary care data analysis and health outcome valuation.

Eligibility and Application Process for Prospective PhD Students
Ideal candidates possess a strong background in economics, statistics, or health-related disciplines, along with demonstrated research skills through honours or masters-level work. Essential requirements include excellent analytical and communication abilities, knowledge of the Australian primary care system, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively with clinicians and patients.
Expressions of interest close on 3 July 2026 and must include a two-page statement of interest, a criteria response, current CV, academic transcripts, and a sample of written academic work. Successful applicants may receive tuition fee waivers under the Research Training Program along with a living stipend supported by the National Health and Medical Research Council for up to three years.
Benefits of Pursuing Health Economics Research in Australian Universities
Engaging in this PhD program offers unparalleled access to personalised supervision from world-class academics in geriatric medicine, primary care, and health economics. Students benefit from Bond University’s modern facilities on the Gold Coast and potential opportunities for tutoring or research assistant roles within the faculty.
The research directly contributes to sustainable healthcare delivery by identifying cost-effective ways to embed frailty interventions in general practice. This aligns with national priorities to enhance patient experiences and reduce long-term health system burdens.
