The Hsinchu Campus of the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC) is Taiwan's flagship facility for synchrotron radiation research, focusing on advanced light sources for multidisciplinary scientific investigations. Located in the heart of Hsinchu Science Park, it hosts two world-class synchrotron facilities: the Taiwan Light Source (TLS), a 1.5 GeV storage ring operational since 1993 with 26 beamlines, and the cutting-edge Taiwan Photon Source (TPS), a 3 GeV synchrotron delivering first light in 2014, boasting brightness 10,000 times higher than TLS and supporting up to 48 experimental stations. These enable atomic-scale studies in physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, and beyond, serving over 2,000 users annually from academia, industry, and international collaborators. The campus emphasizes innovation in nanotechnology, biomedicine, energy materials, and environmental sciences through high-precision X-ray techniques.
- Materials Science and Engineering: Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), and high-pressure diffraction for analyzing semiconductors, thin films, nanomaterials, and phase transformations critical to Taiwan's tech industry.
- Structural Biology and Life Sciences: Macromolecular crystallography (MX), serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX), and bio-SAXS for protein structure determination, drug discovery, and biomolecular dynamics.
- Chemistry and Catalysis: X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS/EXAFS/XANES) and time-resolved studies for probing chemical bonding, reaction mechanisms, and catalyst performance.
- Condensed Matter Physics: Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS), soft X-ray spectroscopy, and coherent diffraction imaging for electronic structure, magnetism, and quantum materials research.
- Earth and Environmental Sciences: Micro-XRF, XAFS for trace element analysis in geological samples, pollutants, and cultural heritage artifacts.
- Industrial Applications: Non-destructive testing, quality control in semiconductors, batteries, and pharmaceuticals, supporting R&D for high-tech manufacturing.
